I run a regular board game night and we often play Jungle Speed, a game my partner really likes. It's a game of pattern recognition and reaction time: you take turns putting down cards with patterns on them, and said patterns are often deceptively similar to each other. If two people have the same pattern, they have to make a grab for the totem in the middle of the table, what the rules call a 'duel'. The person who grabs it first wins the duel, and the loser has to pick up all the cards that their opponent put down, as well as all the cards they put down. Whoever first gets rid of all the cards in their hand and their pile wins the game.

What I noticed with this game is that the weakest player(s) will often end up with like 80% of all the cards combined, and the real competition is only between the players in the top 50%. Player skill also varies a lot, and this variance is in large part inherent: my partner is extremely good at quickly recognizing matching patterns and even if she doesn't win all the time, she is at least very good at outplaying slower players so decisively that they stand no chance of winning after three minutes of game time.

So I came up with an alternative rule. Instead of the loser of the duel picking up both their and the opponent's pile, they only pick up their opponent's pile. Their own pile stays put, so even if they lose one duel, they might be able to get ahead on cards if they win the next one, assuming their pile is bigger than the one they picked up. Additionally, this limits how much a good player is able to stack the deck (literally) against their opponents by winning repeated duels; they can distribute their own cards to their opponents but one decisive loss is enough to undo all of their progress. I think this is a better fit for a reaction time game that typically has large skill gaps in between players. I tried this rule during one game with 5 players, and three of us were down to no cards before I made the winning grab, with a lot of cards left on the table. I'm going to keep using this rule, it strikes me as a big improvement.
