One of the first stories in Jane Austen’s Juvenillia revolves around the story of Frederic and Elfrida. In the story, Elfrida’s parents want Elfrida to marry Frederic before they die, but the union does not happen for a while due to concerns over Elfrida’s mental state. Then, when the young Eleanor comes to visit, Frederic becomes affectionate towards her instead of Elfrida. As a result, Elfrida begins to feel old and overlooked, informing Frederic her intention of marrying him the next day. Frederic denies her request to get married, sending Elfrida into a distressed state. She falls into a frenzy of fainting fits after the rejection, each time barely recovering before the next fit. Frederic upon hearing of the terrible state Elfrida was in, decides that he will marry her after all. 

I created this meme using imgflip.com and decided to use the Drake “Hotline Bling” images because I thought it represented Frederic’s illogical reasoning well. Frederic’s decision to marry Elfrida only after her she intentionally hurts herself with the fainting fits is questionable at best. I think the meme illustrates the humor of people acting irrational when it comes to love. The Drake pictures come from the song, “Hotline Bling”, which is a song about changed past loves. Similarly, Frederic sees Elfrida in a new light after her physical condition changes, therefore I believe the images from the song match Frederic and Elfrida’s relationship. The meme illustrates Frederic’s indecisive nature and questionable judgement as well as showcasing some of the absurd details that Austen writes in the stories of Juvenillia.
