“Lie to Me” circumstances, lyrics, and music video tell a heartbreaking story. But to look into what that story is would be another kind of heartbreak. It is not the narrative being pushed. You were supposed to be distracted by the engagement so you would not see all of this.
LTM’s MV drop coincided with another event that had been accomplished seven days before.

11 June 2018 from 0:00-1:55
We get the LTM interpretation from Cocktail chats on 11 June 2018 from the band before anything has occurred. It’s explained that LTM is about being in a romantic situation where someone is in it for reasons that you are not. It’s inspired by heartbreak and wanting to move on. Before Luke can relate it back to his personal life, he is cut off. It is as though they want you to know there is a connection here but that is all the hint that we are given.
Maybe he was drunk and lost track of what he was saying. He could have said something too honest. What he had to say didn’t represent what they really wanted for the band’s image. Or it could have been irrelevant. So all the information is that it’s related to his personal life and Luke says he used to listen to this song 400 times a day.

Michael Clifford and Crystal Leigh are engaged as of January 11, 2019. The engagement occurs in Bali. It is apparently entirely paid and sponsored by guess #DestinationGUESS, who uses the engagement as a means for promoting themselves.
There’s a party of people there for the engagement. Missing however are the three people who will become like brothers to their new sister. They say it’s weird that the couple are professionally photographed. Or that Michael would be with someone as discriminatory and mean as Crystal. Or Crystal would be with someone who was chubby at a point like Michael.
These are not the only nuggets surrounding the event. It was apparently already a well-coordinated trip since December 2018, when Michael’s girlfriend first dropped a hint on Instagram. Many articles are published about the event, treating Michael like an A-list celebrity. Some people say that’s weird. I say news was slow that week. But we’ll be moving on.

Re-cap: Michael, his new fiancee, or the boys have said anything about the engagement. Now on the fifth day following, Ashton goes quirky. What would you do if your best friend got engaged?
This doesn’t seem right.
He’s saying he wrote a song about love in Russian. But the words are actually in Spanish. So it’s a fake Russian love song because it’s really a Spanish love song. The Russian love song is a joke, a ruse.

Ashton has never been quiet in reference to how he feels about PR stunts. He’s spoken about them with disdain. Of course, this Tweet could be up for interpretation, but that’s what I think. Ashton is very good at throwing shade.
30 minutes after Ashton’s tweet, Michael announces the engagement. Ashton deletes his tweet not long after.
Up to then, they had been quiet about the engagement. I think that’s okay.
And then the final frosting comes with LTM’s MV premiere. So, Michael gets engaged and the band (which includes Michael) collectively went “Alright, let’s publish a music video about heartbreak and being manipulated with lies.” Probably I wouldn’t have agreed the week of my engagement was the right time to drop a video called “Lie to Me”. That’s a weird way to congratulate their best friend about to seal the deal forever. If any of my friends did that to me I’d be royally confused. They. do not seem pleased for him. I don’t believe 5sos is selfish enough to want M all to themselves. You can be if you think they’re that clingy. But then 5sos would be the toxic ones. I believe they love each other too much to not want the best for Michael.

Michael’s fiancee maintains her silence.
We get another tweet from Ashton before the release of LTM MV.
We can appreciate that he seemingly more concerned with people and truth than he is with money and fame. We can appreciate too that being in a toxic situation might mean a person has no self-esteem and does not understand their self-worth. So they stay in bad situations because they think that’s what’s best for them.
I thought this line stood out most prominently:
“All you can do is watch.”
There are ways to gently intervene with a toxic, I-have-no-value-without-her type situations. If the victim is your friend, telling them that they’re good and you love them, and you will always love/support them no matter what. By helping them clean their houses, or taking them temporarily away on short “breaks” like on walks, for coffee, or casual day activities away from their partner (assuming this person isn’t forcing them to isolate from their peers) that help them see there are other options. They still might not see the possibilities, they still might continue to pursue their abuser, but more often than not, when people see there are other choices than being punished constantly, they’ll opt for the one that makes them feel most free and happy. Ashton strikes me as the kind of person who is deeply empathetic, and kind. He would do things like this to bolster his friend’s self-esteem in this kind of situation. It doesn’t make sense that he only watches.
He says he doesn’t have a choice but to watch. He separates himself from the statement by putting it in second person. Instead of saying “All I can do is watch” he says “All you can do is watch.” This is a common psychological phenomenon when someone wants to distance themselves from something uncomfortable. It is often easier for people to talk about others than it is for them to talk about themselves.
So why would Ashton have no choice? He might have no choice but to witness an abusive situation if they signed away their freedoms.
The person inside the relationship might want to leave. He is not truly interested in being abused because he already has self-worth and know he deserves better. He’s a party man actually and loves being free, he thought that was the “highest of highs.” However, this person does not have any choice but to endure it “with no attempt to escape” because he does not have the option to. Legally they all are bound to comply.

On its own, this is enough to say Mystal is a PR relationship. She is very pretty, they had a fairy tail relationship and engagement, a lot of their photos and videos together are really hot and perfect. But you don’t go “Aw, look how cute we are” and then publish a music video about Heartbreak and deceit and lacking self-worth.
LTM lyrically and the Music video give us a lens into an entirely new side of the story. Heartbreaking. A wild side, a crazy side, an unbelievable story.
