1. Who are your top 5 queens and why?
i got asked this twice so in this ask i’m gonna do rugirls and in the next i’ll do non-rugirls!! :)
1. sasha velour - if u wanna get deep, i lost my mum at 14, which hugely influenced my personality, and i realised i was in love with sasha’s work when i connected with her jan 2017 nightgowns of performance of ‘this woman’s work’ by kate bush - the moment where she stands there, in her mom’s clothes, conveying heartbreak, but still placing a crown on her head, was SO empowering to me. i’ll never forget it. basically, her emotional performances really appeal to me as a weird, emotional gay lmao, and her unique aesthetic is beyond stunning. i love her creativity and beauty, & especially the fact that she is constantly using her platform to draw attention to poc and trans performers who don’t have her privilege. i’ve been introduced to so many AMAZING drag artists through her. she was also the first rugirl i noticed that really seemed to celebrate lgbp women in her drag, and that was important to me in accepting myself :)
2. trixie mattel - this is a less deep reason, but equally as valid i think: she makes me laugh. her dark comedy makes me feel better about the world and she is fucking stupid in the best possible way, it makes me happy
3. peppermint - she is soooooo BEAUTIFUL and KIND, an inspiring activist, and a talented af performer. it was beyond brave of her to go on drag race as an openly trans black woman bc the fanbase is questionable at the best of times, and still she has never been anything but warm, intelligent, and patient. never has the phrase ‘we don’t deserve her’ been more true of a queen. she is a beacon of light and i will support her until i Die !
4. courtney act - i have loved courtney for a long time and as long as i have been following her has always radiated positivity and sought to use her platform educate people about lgbt+ issues. her time on celebrity big brother was amazing to watch, and i think we were very lucky to have such a tactful, smart, forbearing and unbelievably likeable ambassador representing the drag to the mainstream, and also using her voice to educate people about lgbt - and specifically trans - issues. she’s also a talented singer and performer, really funny and charming, and her shows make me happy!
5. the vixen - new addition to my top 5 but i feel confident about it! i think she’s so fucking cool and all her numbers i’ve watched have been insane, and stupid powerful. her drag is political, it is angry, and why tf shouldn’t it be? the race issues she is talking about are important and she is demanding they be witnessed. also her verse in ‘cocky’ changed my life. plus she can be messy and same, bitch!
