Karen 3.10

I wanna talk how I dont for a second really blame Karen about Kevin´s death. And I get WHY she blames herself and it makes sense to the character and the show storyline but for me, she needs to forgive herself and I TRULY HOPE MATT (and Foggy) will help on that!

* So, Karen is 19 years old and Kevin was 16... in the dinner scene she mentions “This place has been going down for YEARS” , that makes me think that her mother had been dead for 2 years or so... meaning that she was 16, or 17 then and Kevin was like 14,,, I can see a 16 years old girl so HURT AND ANGRY because her mother was gone but instead of having the HELP AND SUPPORT from her father... He could just NOT SEE his children´s needs, he could only see his pain and his suffering, he was that selfish.

So KAREN had to be the mom, she had to take care of her little brother AND HER FATHER with mom gone... a teenager, with emotional problems of her own but she didnt have time or NO ONE to take care of those.

“Mom used to do everything around here...NOW I HAVE TO...”

She had to take care of EVERYTHING... again, we are talking about a girl from 16/17 to 19 years old..! - and you can see in the episode that her father puts ALOT of pressure on her, and HOW the job is done. He is not just ok with her doing, it had to be done perfectly or like HE wanted it,

She had to give up on HER DREAMS, on what SHE WANTED for her life and future! 

She would GIVE HERSELF UP for her family, or what it was left of it...

She couldnt just LEAVE THEM... she wouldnt.

Also I believe because her brother was young and if she left, would her father man up and take care of him? or would he do to Kevin what HE DID TO KAREN when she was 16? - She was too nice, too affraid to leave as a question, she would not leave her baby brother with her selfish father.

 A FATHER that not only couldnt see her pain, her struggles or her brothers OR HIS FREAKING WIFE´s true dreams and wishes, he could not freaking see ANYONE BUT HIMSELF? Talk to me about being blind... BUT he was actually was incredible rude and INSENSITIVE towards Karen... sexist if I have to say... she was a girl, so SHE DIDNT HAVE A SAY even if SHE TOOK CARE OF THE WHOLE PLACE..!!!

And this part of the scene MAKES ME SO ANGRY,,,

CAN YOU BELIEVE THIS PIECE OF SH*T!!!???? - He not only ignores his daughters wishes, overworkers and makes her responsable of taking care of her little brother AND THE WHOLE PLACE... He buys shit they cant afford and PRETENDS FOR HER TO FIX IT... its also HER JOB to fix his FREAKING POOR DECISIONS!!! 

You can totally see the anger, the frustration in all over her face...she wants to scream, she wants to run for her life but she cant. she wont.

She was  A KID, being mistreated, being ABUSED by her father... she didnt want that for her life, she wanted to leave, she hated that small town but she couldnt , SHE WAS TRAPPED THERE. so whats the most common way of teenager to act out? Yeah, seeing bad boys and doing drugs... can you blame her? I feel soffocated just thinking about her situation!

- The ACCIDENT...

She finally stood up for herself, she spoke her truth, her mothers truth  and her sweet little brother did something as STUPID as burning  your sister´s drug dealer boyfriend´s trailer and STAY THERE FOR HIM TO FIND YOU...

She even shots her boyfriend TO SAVE her brother Kevin! - She was scared and nervous and SHE NEEDED TO GET  OUT OF THERE... Yeah, not being sober, CLEARLY didn help but what OPTIONS did she really had? - Would have she acted DIFFERENT if she WAS SOBER?

This is heartbreaking, poor Kevin... but She Would NOT JUST LEAVE... She was not about to do it. She was going to FIX IT. She always does. 

and SHE DOES NOT ABANDON THE PEOPLE SHE LOVES (MATT)

 In my eyes, EVERYTHING that happened was just circumtastial ...  Her dad was an IDIOT, his actions, his abuse behavior towards her made her take poor decisions as taking drugs, her sweet brother as an INTENT to protect her / saver her made a stupid MISTAKE too, her dick boyfriend was to freaking KILL her brother... all of that, was not on her! - Taking drugs that night, driving the care... yeah, maybe but...

what Kevin said “Ive already lost mom” ,,,bringing up their dead mom to this whole mess... she CLEARLY was not over her death, neither was Kevin (they clearly didnt have HELP on dealing with it, thanks to their father!). So bringing her up, saying that , it really was a stab in Karen´s heart... it was split of second, it was ONE FUCKING SECOND and it all went down.

My big question is... was it really her fault? and even, was it really about the drugs? 

I feel that could have happened WITHOUT the drugs being involve perfectly. 

Its not like she was drugged and went straight to a tree or another car or something... He said SOMETHING PAINFUL, and she got distracted, one second with her eyes out of the road and that was it. 

I fee that could have happened to a SOBER person. 

Maybe just me, but I dont really blame her AT ALL ... And I understand why she feels guilty, because she didnt leave because of guilt but when she says “I killed him” or even putting it next to killing Wesley sounds a bit much to me.

This annoys the hell out of me too...

Her asshole of father, BLAMES HER and even bring up her mother, trying to make her feel EVEN WORSE... 

And no, let me tell ya... if her mother was alive, Karen wouldnt have gotten into drugs in the first place, and Kevin wouldnt have try to PROTECT HER... so yeah, if they had a REAL GOOD PARENT, none of that would have happened!

If her father could take his head out of his ass and instead of seeing HIS NEEDS AND HIS PAIN only but actually comfort his kids and be a good guide and support system to them, Kevin would be alive and they would still be a family. -

If Kevin didnt die, Karen would probably still be in that damn town or dead herself.

So in that moment he kicks her ,,, He was still angry, needed time to process everything... 

But NO, even 14 YEARS LATER... 14 LONG YEARS, he still does not take one piece of responsability for what happened... he STILL blames it all on her!

 and only that, he doesnt give a shit if she almost died, or if she is still in danger,  BUT HE ACTUALLY MAKES SURE to make her feel guilty, small and bad...

Oh boy, I wanna punch him!

and Then people say she was reckless in going to see FISK, SHE COULDNT CARE ABOUT HER LIFE! - She lost Matt, her job, Ellison, she felt guilty about the bulletin shoot and her FATHER MADE SURE she believe it was all her fault, Because thats she does... she is a “bad person” that only brings misery to this world... would she let Fisk kill more innocent people or get to Matt or Foggy..? NO. of course NOT, even if she had to die trying.

Anyways, I HATE HER FATHER... Didnt you notice?

Im just happy she has MATT and Foggy in her life. They love her and care for her and know who SHE REALLY IS!!

 THEY are her family, her home... her future husband and their best friend. WE LOVE A TRIO !

Karedevil Hurt Meta

I thought long and hard about my favorite angsty scene between Matt and Karen until finally I settled on the one from 2x08 “Guilty as Sin”. You know where Karen shows up unannounced at Matt’s apartment and finds him there with another woman. It’s fairly brief and although this is not their most meaty one on one scene it does pack quiet the emotional punch in the heart.

So things aren’t going well at the Frank Castle trial. Both Karen and Foggy are stressed out and becoming impatient with Matt’s absence. During a recess they argue whether or not they actually need their friend and Karen decides to go find Matt who at that point is distracted tending to his injured ex Elektra. Sure enough the second he hears her come in, he becomes anxious. Matt doesn’t have to use his special abilities to sense Karen’s presence he knows its her and quickly jumps off the bed to see her standing before him in the doorway. 

Oddly enough Matt is surprised to see Karen and he’s unable to process an explanation; the best he do is breathe her name. And she just stands there stunned wearing a confused expression surveying him and the woman lying in his bed. This immediately has me reminiscing back to their first date where Matt politely declines Karen’s offer to sleep with her and at that point I know her heart is breaking. And this is all happening just as she’s starting to figure out her feelings for Matt. She wants to believe he’s not unfaithful but between her frustrations with his disappearing acts Karen isn’t in the mood to get answers. 

As Matt approaches her, he urgently insists they go somewhere to talk privately; but she backs away refusing his hands. Karen isn’t interested, wanting more than ever to just leave. Matt’s voice is shrouded in guilt as he utters “this isn’t what it looks like.”  To which Karen stutters back “it doesn’t-doesn’t matter...” and as she says this I can feel my soul rip in half as the shame washes over his face. He knows he’s hurt her in the worst way, the fact that she won’t let him repair the damages is killing him. And this is a person he never wanted to cause pain. 

Karen can’t even think straight or look him in the eye let alone take in anymore of his excuses. And instead covers up her humiliation with a scapegoat of being there solely about the trial. Before Matt can respond, Karen quickly exits out of the bedroom doorway and hurries to vacate the premises as fast as she can. Leaving Matt standing there in silence, torn, wearing his infamous wounded puppy look as he processes the whole confrontation.  

I don’t know why this scene affects me so much but every time I watch it I’m gutted. I feel for Karen and am just bewildered by Matt’s inability to be honest with her. The acting between Deborah and Charlie is so on point and raw that it leaves you in pit of dread. Its deliberately made awkward to create that authentic aura of a lover catching their significant other red handed yet the atmosphere remains tame and not too overly heated or melodramatic. And because this scene is so small it can be hard to miss the layers going on which is why I consider it one of Karedevil’s most underrated moments on the show.

And that’s my Karedevil week angst fill for the day.

Yes, they both do. 

Karen has a red and blue checked tie of Matt’s. Originally it was an extra one which was kept at the office for emergencies, but somehow it got swept up in her things when it was time to dissolve Nelson & Murdock. When she came across it afterward, she kept it in a box which she hastily shoved to the back of the closet for sometime afterward, for reasons she couldn’t quite name. But after everything at Midland Circle, she dug it out. It still smelled faintly of him and she broke down when she inhaled his scent. When she finally drifted off to sleep that night (after some help from some whiskey), it was with the tie clutched in her hands. After that, she kept it on her bedside table and it would keep her up some night staring at it and wondering what if.

After he comes back and they make up, she still keeps the tie and will spend time wrapping it around her hand and tracing the pattern of the fabric when he’s out doing his other job 

Matt relied on his sense memory when he missed her before, when the firm dissolved, but as that got harder, he succumbed to picking up an extra bottle of shampoo at the store - for guests, obviously - but which just so happened to be the same scent and brand that Karen used. He would use it to call up memories of her since he barely saw her, and it kept him from giving in to the passing urge that he occasionally had to go check up on her and see how she was doing. Most nights if he would happen to run across her somewhere out in the city, it would be in the course of something else or because their paths had genuinely crossed at some point, and not for the sole purpose of him seeking her out and waiting for her so that he could get close enough to catch a bit of her scent on the wind. Because he’s not trying to be creepy.

Many months later - after Midland Circle and after he heals and comes back and they make their amends and rebuild their relationship -  she eventually finds the bottle one day after taking a shower at his place, she brings it to his attention and he simply shrugs saying that he thought he’d get it for her to have, just in case she ever needed it, in a situation such as the current one. She smiles and thanks him for his generosity. He’s not entirely sure she’s convinced, but in the end it doesn’t matter because he gets regular access to her now, so he doesn’t need the shampoo as a stand-in any more.

Do you have any thoughts as to what the big mystery from Karen's past will be?

I have a couple thoughts on what it could be, but I’m a bit tentative to answer as we’re about to find out in Season 3. I’m gonna look like such a fool when the answer is revealed. 😂

So from what we know from the newspaper Karen reads in Season 2, her brother died in a car accident, and I’m pretty sure her Father was mentioned to be in the car as well.

My guess is that Karen was super close with her brother, and after he died so abruptly her family just fell apart. I feel like her Dad is a total dick. Like he’s gonna blame her for her brother’s death, and just be abusive, verbally or physically, towards the rest of the family.

I have no ideas about what Karen’s relationship with her Mom will be. Because she’s not mentioned in the article I feel like she won’t be as big a role. Maybe just somebody who refuses to save Karen from their bad situation?

Finally, this is all leading up to what I believe the dark secret will be.

It seems a LOT in this season will be following the Born Again arc of the Daredevil comics, and as most of us know, that was a dark time for our Karen Page.

To fit her character, I think they’ll make the drug addiction/porn star events in the past, instead of the present.

Even in Season 1 when Ben says he knows her secret she acts flustered and embarrassed. Obviously not something bad enough to be hated for, or to live life in prison.

My only thought towards it being worse is her line, “You really think I’ve never shot anybody?” To Wesley before she kills him. But she’s so upset and haunted by his death I don’t think she killed someone before that.

So, I think we’re about to see some shit, especially considering how much from the Born Again arc that’s already been confirmed.

why we aren’t supposed to ship m*ttelektra

not saying you can’t, just that the writers really don’t want you to. (in case it wasn’t clear, i’m not a m*ttelektra shipper which is why i’m trying to keep it out of the tag since the actual shippers probably won’t want to see this) 

ok so let’s think about this. why do people like the ship? well, matt and elektra have a lot of chemistry, and they have a past, and i think that’s pretty much it. those are by no means bad reasons, but they fail to incorporate what’s most important about these two characters as people. continued under the cut. 

(in case it wasn’t clear already, this post is gonna have a pretty heavy bias in favor of karedevil, firstly because i ship it, secondly because it’s also very clearly what’s intended to be endgame at this point, or at least as endgame as we’re going to get in a daredevil adaptation. i do not think that fanon ships like matt/foggy or kastle are explicitly rejected in the writing in the same way that m*ttelektra is, but nor are they really endorsed at least in the show proper, so they don’t really have any input in the conversation here.)

1. their past. 

so as our window into matt and elektra’s shared past we get some pretty spicy flashbacks, some very sexy “we belong together”s, and one person trying to coerce the other into killing a man. 

yeah... okay. obviously we all know this was their breaking point. elektra’s trying to help matt by giving him closure over something traumatic that happened in his past, but she’s doing it in a really fucked up way. so elektra knows that matt can fight, and that he seems to want to use that ability for some sort of purpose, but it really is a big fucking leap to jump from “is a fighter” and “has violent tendencies” to “is willing to kill a man,” as is evidenced by matt’s absolute horror when he realizes that’s what she’s telling him to do. what’s problematic here is that it doesn’t even seem to occur to elektra that this could potentially be a hangup for matt, even though as a kid she encountered this problem before, as seen in the flashback in 2x12. to put it bluntly, and i don’t mean this as a condemnation of her character, she is so morally bankrupt that she fundamentally can’t understand the moral thought process of someone who is not. and if she can’t understand it – at least given the evidence of her own actions – she can’t respect it. 

this wouldn’t necessarily have to be a deal-breaking problem, except that morality is such a fundamental part of matt’s character that it’s basically inseparable from who he is. and yes, i say that with the awareness that he often shows signs of wanting to separate himself from it. more on that later.

2. their fundamental differences. 

so here’s their big problem. matt’s primary concern in his life, what he’s dedicated himself to vocationally, is upholding morality – both in his public career as a lawyer and in his private pursuit as a vigilante. he cares about and is concerned with the law and considers his career a good way to fulfill certain aspects of his vocation, but he at times becomes frustrated with it and wants a shortcut, so he uses the daredevil persona to further his own moral compass outside the bounds of the law. we all know this. 

what elektra understands about daredevil is that it’s an expression of matt’s pretty extreme violent impulses, which i think we have to acknowledge definitely exist and are difficult for him to keep a rein on some of the time. but she has no comprehension of the morality part, other than that there’s this thing that matt is allowing to tie him down for no real reason. she recognizes that daredevil is a means to an end, but she misunderstands what that end actually is. ultimately, matt didn’t create daredevil because he was just a really angry guy and he wanted to beat people up; he created the persona because injustice in the world made him angry and he wanted to fix it. asking him to symbolically abandon matt murdock the lawyer and fully become daredevil is a misunderstanding in the order of giving an artist money so that they don’t have to make art anymore.

essentially, matt has a purpose in his life which he has chosen for himself, and it’s both facilitated by and facilitates violence but not centered around violence. elektra is, by comparison, totally aimless, and is elated when she finds something to pursue because it gives her more chances to be violent. she treats violence/chaos/whatever as an end, matt treats it as means. i’m not saying that this necessarily makes her a bad person, as matt also has a fairly severe sadistic streak and we still talk about him like he’s our precious cinnamon bun baby, but it is a massive divide between their characters that the show all but tells us is impossible to bridge.

3. why they can’t be together. 

they are not capable of truly understanding each other, nor are they capable of changing for each other. both have moments where they seem to want to leave themselves behind and change for the other person, but this ultimately turns out not to work – for elektra because she sees herself as so inherently violent that she can’t (read: doesn’t want to) restrain herself from killing, for matt because, as we said, trying to entirely become daredevil and “free” himself from his morality is putting the cart before the horse. 

4. “but matt’s still in love with her!”

i think in a way this can be considered true – even when he’s spitting acid at her he’s still clearly attracted to her, and his deep caring for her is pulled out more and more over the course for season 2 even though it’s a bit like pulling teeth. 

ultimately, though, i think matt knows that being with elektra is antithetical to everything he dedicates himself to, and that’s why he turns to it so easily, even despite all the apparent obstacles. his position, constantly toeing the line between morality and amorality, is exhausting, and he’s longing for a break – and given his problems with karen in season 2, he’s also longing for somebody who will unconditionally accept what he does without judging him the way he’s felt judged by foggy and karen and, to a lesser extent, claire. when he asks elektra to stay with him (clearly keeping the option open that they’ll be together romantically, wilfully ignoring the little problem that he also loves and wants to be with karen) and she agrees, things are already going downhill and his little ally triangle with elektra and stick has begun to separate him from what i would consider his true support network of foggy and karen, which is almost certainly intentional on stick’s part. his offer to elektra to “run” with her comes at a moment of absolute despair for him, when he’s basically ruined all of his close relationships and feels as though his life as matt murdock has been run into the ground. he’s choosing not to think about the fact that this relationship is ultimately unsustainable, and as a matter of fact, it seems that this time elektra realizes this. it’s clear that she cares about him and that she’d like to believe he is sincere, but that she knows he’s going against his own moral code and abandoning everything else that’s important to him in saying this to her. 

matt murdock with a strong support network, without the copious emotional breakdowns and arguments that occurred over the course of the second season, would never have made that offer to elektra, and i think that says a lot. he might care about her, he might want what she can give him, but waiting for his life to be an absolute shambles before he’ll be with her doesn’t say love to me.

5. “but they’ll never be truly happy with other people!”

now it’s time to talk about karen and why matt can, in fact, be happy with her – and is, for a few brief, sweet moments in season 2. 

in a lot of ways, matt’s problems with elektra can be translated onto karen. she isn’t violent in the same way that elektra is violent, but she is a killer, and she’s demonstrated herself to actually be more forgiving of violence than matt himself, given her propensity to make excuses for frank. so when she indicates to matt that she doesn't want him to be daredevil, i think we can pretty safely extrapolate that this is primarily out of concern for his safety and not condemnation of his methods.

significantly, karen also has an extremely convicting moral instinct that clearly mirrors daredevil's. as acknowledged by other characters, primarily ben, she seems incapable of letting something go if she sees injustice going on, no matter at how much of a risk it puts herself (or others, at least up until ben's death in s1). she also agonizes over killing wesley and hides it from matt, not because she mistrusts him, but very obviously because she knows he has a strong moral code and she is afraid of him rejecting her over her perceived lapse in morals.

similarly, matt has no idea of her feelings of unworthiness or her morally grey position, but i actually think he keeps the reality of his life from her not necessarily because he fears judgement, but as a kind of self-sabotage. he has deep feelings for karen that he hasn't really acknowledged, and he knows deep down that ultimately she has to find out, but he's afraid to really commit to the difficult task of actually working through this problem because he is so enamored with karen and it's much easier to let their relationship fail over his dishonesty than to actually try and potentially have it fail anyway. i kind of see his half-attempts to be with elektra and his suicide mission in defenders the same way. they're an escape door, not what he really wants.

after s2, they're more or less on a level playing field. karen now knows that matt does not have a moral high ground of any kind over her, not just because he treated her and foggy so poorly after elektra showed up, but also because he's not nearly as squeaky clean morally as he's been pretending to be this whole time. she knows she isn't unworthy of him, and he doesn't have the easy excuse of daredevil to fall back on anymore if he gets nervous. especially given karen's becoming a journalist and thereby having an ideal vehicle to better understand matt in the guise of daredevil, i think these two are in a perfect position to sort out their problems, and there is absolutely nothing stopping them from being happy together. matt might have some problems with intimacy and karen might have some skeletons in the closet and hangups about matt being daredevil, but those aren't ground-level issues and i find it unlikely they'll be the death of the pairing in the long run.

as for elektra, if she's not dead, it isn't clear to me that matt was ever any kind of one and only for her. she loved him, sure, and she was definitely carrying a torch for him, but he's not the only person who can ever understand her (seeing as he doesn't) and he's certainly not the only person she's capable of loving. give the girl some damn credit maybe ? she honestly deserves better than a guy who treats her like a coping mechanism.

tl;dr karedevil makes sense in the narrative, m*ttelektra ultimately doesn't, but everybody can ship what they want, thanks for coming to my ted talk.

Someone special

I´ve been thinking why it took so long for Matt and Karen to give the next step to their relationship, I mean you have to  be blind (even Matt could see it) not to see that there was something ELSE, *something special* right from the start between them... and Why people would even ship Matt and Claire, KNOWING that Matt and Karen was supossed to happen? and why it was took so little for Matt to actually kiss Claire? and over a year to kiss Karen? Here what came to mind: 

* Matt right from the moment he met her has this strong feeling of protection towards Karen, she was scared and alone... she was filled with guilt because of her co-worker´s death... she got burnt because she was trying to do the right thing . Matt connected with her, in a way not even he could completely acknowlege or understand in that moment. He saw so much of himself in her, his young self right when his father died and he was alone and scared and no one was there to protect him... an innocent blind kid, He saw that innocence in Karen too...

 He has to protect her no matter what!

This is very important ... Matt could totally sense Karen´s reaction EVERYTIME he said something or the way she looked at him, not trying to hide her feelings confident that he could not see it all over her face but oh well HE COULD. If he wasnt interested he would NEVER feed her romantic feelings , crush, sexual tension (whatever you wanna call it) towards him, but he couldnt help himself and he did, more than once...

THIS MOMENT!!! - first of all, the writters were PRETTY OBVIOUS here... it was cristal clear : MATT AND KAREN were going to happen !!!

Second, in this scene you can see Karen is totally smitten over him and MATT himself can and they have this little flirty banter. By this moment (end of episode 1) their bussines with Karen were done yet Matt was not done with her (Foggy neither lol ) ...  so they decided for her to stay in their lives, because even if Matt felt that she liked him and he liked her too, there was SOMETHING MORE, SOMETHING DEEPER... he wanted her in his life, for the long term.

I will go back to this moment, because Matt x Claire shippers would scream he said something similar to Claire but FIRST when we see Matt saying to Foggy that he was looking for someone “he could love to listen to” in that flashback, it was later in the season and Claire was long gone but Karen was very present and strong in his life ... 

and then we got this scene 

She brought him a freaking monkey baloom!!! and also  the usual “Karen, be careful please” almost like a whisper, almost like begging because at that moment he felt he lost Foggy, he could not lose her!

Then, we all know Matt he does not let people just in like that, like Foggy said “he dates but not for more than 2 months” ... so would Matt try to date Karen for 2 months right after they met and then what? She wasnt just some random girl he met and wanted to make out with, she was MORE, she was IMPORTANT TO HIM . Kissing Claire was easy because he didnt have a thing to lose, when it didnt work out LIKE EVERYTIME before, she was out of his life and he kept going... but with Karen? there was MUCH MORE at risk, the most is in play, the bigger the risk, the scarier it gets... he felt something WAY STRONGER for Karen but was he ready to open up , was he worthy of this gorgeous “inoccent” kind woman? could he risk the relationship, the friendship between the 3 of them? the answer is NO. 

But hey Im not saying he didnt LIKE Claire, but what he felt for Karen was deeper and scarier... because the last person he felt something similar was Elektra and it turned out really bad... but in this case he was “ elektra” and he could not damage or bring pain into Karen´s life, she had enough and he knows it, so by then having her in his life, seeing her everyday, keeping her close and safe was enough.

Im bringing this up bc some people still think season 1 karedevil was one sided, or still think that Claire was better for Matt LOL ... but ALSO because I can see this repeating itself during the last part of season 3 and the time between S3 and S4... Their feelings, LOVE is strong , they know it but they have been there and it didnt work out... the risk is huge, as big if not BIGGER than before... for now being in each other´s lives and safe is good enough, thats why they didnt make out in the moment they fixed things or at the last scene of this season, it will take time but they will go there, because THEIR LOVE IS TOO STRONG to be stopped.
