Give a Year. Change the World.

My name is Ricardo Esquivias and I served as a corps member at City Year New Hampshire in 2010-2011 and as a team leader in 2011-2012. In my two years of service, I’ve learned that every young person has the potential to change the world. Whether working one-on-one with a student, facilitating a reading group or doing community service at a local park, it was all the opportunities City Year offered and those I made for myself that inspired me to make a difference.

City Year is a non-profit organization that unites young AmeriCorps members for a year of full-time service to address our nation’s most critical civic challenges: the high school drop out crisis. Coming from California to residing in Manchester, NH, it took some time to get used to living in a place that I now proudly call my home. These past two years, I’ve learned that my love for this city is deeply rooted in my volunteer work as a corps member. Knowing that by putting together an after school event or supporting a program like the Manchester Marathon as a volunteer, I would be developing the skills and experience needed to define who I want to be as a leader.

When I joined this service program, a question I was always asked was “What is City Year?” For me, I think City Year extends beyond our role as tutors, mentors and role models for students, but a chance for young people to reflect deeply on the value of national service. It’s about, realizing you are part of something greater than yourself in your service to others.
