Korean grammar #3 | ~도록 하다

V + 도록 하다

Commonly used with ~도록 하겠습니다, ~도록 하세요, ~도록 하십시오

상대방에게 노력할 것을 권하거나 지시한다. ‘겠습니다’를 붙여 화자가 노력하겠다는 의지를 강조하여 말하기도 한다.

Used to advise the listener to do something to the best of their ability/ to try their best to do something. When ~도록 하겠습니다 is used, it indicates the speaker’s strong intention to do something.

수업에 늦지 않도록 하세요.

Try not to be late for class.

시간을 지켜서 약을 먹도록 하십시오.

Please take your medication on time.

내일부터 일찍 오도록 하겠습니다.

I will come early from tomorrow onwards.

이번 주말까지 이 일을 끝내도록 하겠습니다.

I will try to finish this piece of work by this weekend.

수업을 잘 들으면 시험도 잘 보고 좋은 학점도 받을 수 있으니까 결석을 하지 않도록 하세요.

If you listen in class, you will score well during the exams and get a good grade. So please do not miss any classes.

사회에 나가면 하고 싶어도 못 하니까 여행도 많이 하도록 하십시오.

Once you start working (”enter into society”), you won’t be able to travel even if you want to so travel as much as you can now.

학교에 못 오면 꼭 연락을 드리도록 하겠습니다.

I will definitely contact you if I can't make it to school.

advanced korean grammar #2 | 아무리 -기로서니

(아무리) 동사, 형용사 + -기로서니

앞 문장의 사실은 인정하지만 그것이 뒤 문장의 충분한 이유나 조건이 될 수 없음을 나타낸다. 뜻을 분명하게 하고 강조하기 위해서 앞 문장에는 ‘아무리'가 자주 쓰이고 뒤 문장에는 반어적 의미의 의문문 형태나 부정문 형태가 자주 쓰인다

This grammar structure expresses that while you acknowledge that the preceding clause is true, it does not serve as sufficient reason or conditions for the following clause. ‘아무리' is often used at the start to serve as emphasis and rhetorical questions or negative sentences are often used in the latter clause. 

아무리 회사 상태가 안 좋기로서니 갑자기 해고 통보를 하면 어떻게 해요?

No matter how poorly the company is doing, how could you suddenly issue termination notices?

아무리 스트레스가 쌓이기로서니 날마다 술을 마시면 어떻게 해요?

No matter how stressed you are, how could you drink alcohol every day?

아무리 돈이 중요하기로서니 건강만 하겠어요?

No matter how important money is, could it ever be as important as health?

아무리 익명게시판이기로서니 함부로 남을 비방하면 안되지요.

Even if it is an anonymous message board, it’s not right to recklessly slander others. 

아무리 응원하는 팀이 졌기로서니 선수들에게 욕을 해서야 되겠어요?

Even if the team that you are supporting has lost, did you have to curse at the players?

advanced korean grammar #1 | -긴 -나 보다

동사 + - 긴 -나 보다

형용사 + -긴 - 은/ㄴ가 보다

어떤 사실이나 상황으로 미루어 그런 것 같다고 추측함을 나타낸다. ‘-긴'을 사용하여 동사, 형용사를 반복함으로써 의미가 강화되는 효과가 있다. 

To infer and make predictions/ guesses based on certain facts or situations. When ‘-긴' is used, the verb or adjective is repeated which lends emphasis.

그 영화를 안 본 사람이 없는 걸 보니 영화의 인기가 대단하긴 대단한가 봐요.

Seeing how there’s barely anyone who has not watched the movie, this movie must be immensely popular.

더 이상 이 하천에서 물고기를 찾을 수 없는 걸 보면 환경오염이 심각하긴 심각한가 봐요.

Judging from how we can no longer find any fishes in this stream, the environmental pollution in this area must be quite serious.

웬만해서 잠기지 않은 곳이 잠긴 걸 보니 비가 많이 오긴 왔나 봐요.

For a place that doesn’t usually get flooded to be flooded, the rain must have been heavy.

겨울철 전력 사용량이 최고치를 기록한 걸 보면 지난 겨울이 춥긴 추웠나 봐요.

Seeing how electricity consumption reached a record high this winter season, it must have been cold.

* sentences using this grammar structure are usually accompanied with a earlier clause providing evidence, reason for the prediction/inference.

Korean grammar #4 | ~을지도 모르다

받침 있음 + 을지도 모르다

받침 없음 + ㄹ지도 모르다

동사나 형용사의 어간에 붙여서 어떤 상황일 거라고 추측하지만 확신할 수 없을 때 쓴다.

This is expression is used when you’re predicting a situation that may happen with low certainty. ~ “You’d never know if”

Can be used with both adjectives and verbs.

비가 올지도 몰라서 우산을 가져 왔어요.

It may rain, so I brought an umbrella.

산에 올라가면 배가 고플지도 모르니까 먹을 것을 준비해 가세요.

You’d never know if you’d get hungry after climbing the mountain, so please bring something to eat with you.

한국말을 잘 하는 걸 보면 교포일지도 몰라요.

Seeing how the person is good at Korean, you’d never know if he/she is a Korean living abroad.

사장님께서 벌써 집에 가셨을지도 모릅니다.

The boss may have already went home.

부모님께서 선물을 마음에 안 들어 하실지도 몰라요.

It is possible that my parents will not like the gift.

선생님께서 여러 번 말씀하신 문법이니까 시험에 나올지도 몰라요.

Given how our teacher repeatedly talks about this grammar expression, it is possible that it will appear in the test.

해외 음식이 입맛에 안 맞을지도 몰라서 컵라면과 고추장을 준비했어요.

You’d never know if the food overseas does not suit your palate, so I prepared cup noodles and red chili paste.

여행할 때 현금이 모자랄지도 몰라서 신용 카드를 가지고 가세요.

You’d never know if you’d run out of cash on a trip, so please bring your credit card along with you.

Korean grammar #2 | 았/었으면 하다

V + 았/었으면 하다

N + 이었으면 하다

동사나 형용사의 어간에 붙어서 말하는 사람의 결정이 이루어지기를 바라는 의도를 부드럽게 나타낸다.

Used to express the speaker’s hopes or wishes for a situation to be realised, “I hope....”, “I wish....”, “Please (do sth)....”, “I want you to....”

* Can be used interchangeably with 았/었으면 좋겠다, but 았/었으면 좋겠다 expresses a stronger desire or wish.

이번 발표는 미선 씨가 했으면 해요.

I hope that Mi-sun can do the presentation this time.

라디오 소리가 조금만 더 컸으면 해요.

Please turn up the volume of the radio. 

네가 결혼할 사람은 이해심이 많은 사람이었으면 해.

I hope that the person that you’ll marry is an understanding person.

손님들이 많이 오실 테니까 의자를 좀 넉넉히 준비해 주셨으면 합니다.

Please prepare sufficient seats as there will be many guests attending.

병원에 가야 해서 이번 모임을 연기했으면 해요.

I have to go to the hospital, so I hope we can postpone this gathering.

대학원에 진학해서 공부 좀 더 했으면 해.

I hope you can put more time into your studies now that you’ll be going to graduate school.

우리가 묵을 호텔은 바다 쪽 전망이었으면 해요.

Korean grammar #1 | -은 지

V 받침 있음 (With final consonant) + 은 지

V 받침 없음 (Without final consonant) + ㄴ 지

동사의 어간에 붙어서 선행절의 행위가 이루어진 이후에 시간이 얼마나 지났는지를 나타낸다. Used to express how much time has passed after a certain action has taken place.

김 과장, 회사에 들어온 지 얼마나 됐지?

⇒ Manager Kim, how long has it been since you joined the company? 

웨이 씨가 고등학교를 졸업한 지 3년 지났어요.

⇒ Three years has passed since Wei graduated from high school.

밥을 먹은 지 얼마 되지 않았는데 벌써 배가 고파요.

⇒ It hasn’t been long since I last ate, but I’m already feeling peckish.

저는 한국에 온 지 6개월이 됐는데 아직 한국 생활에 익숙해지지 않았어요.

⇒ It has been six months since I’ve arrived in Korea, but I’m still not used to my life here.
