Indy 800 (Atari, 1975)
So here’s Atari’s backstory, “The Rise and Fall of Atari“! Here’s how Atari started making games, made it big and then just... lost it all in the Big Crash.
Including:
-The start
-The “rival“ that was actually an Atari subsidiary
-Space Invaders success
-Atari Pacman
-ET, and how it led to terrible failure
-Nintendo taking over after Atari was gone
Enjoy!
Rule #1, Tank II (1975)
Been too busy/sick to post much, but I grabbed this game a few weeks back, Tank II. This predates Cabaret cabinets, but clearly is a precursor to what Atari would call Cabarets a few years later.
This game didn’t have a power switch from the factory. Someone “helpfully” wired one up, drilling a hole in the 25¢ plex in the coin door in the process. The wire was old and the insulation crumbling — and it was patched in before the line fuse! I removed it all before powering up, as it could present a serious danger of fire or damage to the game.
The monitor really needs recapping, and I think there’s a game board issue — it immediately starts a game when turned on, which shouldn’t be happening — but it’s in overall awesome shape for a game this old.
