New York Cares Day Spring (April 18th 2015) There's no denying summer is on the way and when this happens many of us begin to venture outdoors to seek fresh air and nice spaces; from kids to parents, grandparents and even animals. Most people are familiar with the opportunities for relaxation and recreation afforded by their city's parks. However New York parks and playgrounds have another dimension, which is not always as evident: an exciting history. From the earliest days of European settlement to the present, parks have witnessed the growth of the city, been part of its development, and provided vital green spaces for its inhabitants. Public spaces are being used now more than ever and it's a collective job to maintain its beauty. The New York City Department of Parks and Recreation has a major task at hand. Despite their experience, they need help with 1 main thing.. the human element aka man-power & woman-power too :) to help maintain these vast spaces. <p>The total area of the properties maintained by the department is over 28,000 acres (113 km²). The department maintains more than 1,700 parks, playgrounds and recreation facilities across the five boroughs. It is responsible for over 1,000 playgrounds, 800 playing fields, 550 tennis courts, 35 major recreation centers, 66 pools, 14 miles (23 km) of beaches, and 13 golf courses, as well as seven nature centers, six ice skating rinks, over 2000 green-streets and four major stadiums. Parks also cares for park flora and fauna, community gardens, 23 historic houses, over 1,200 statues and monuments, and more than 2.5 million trees.. So like we said, they may need a little help. On New York Cares Day Spring, members of the Worldwide Psychos teamed up with other volunteers and New York Cares to revitalize Franz Sigel Park located in the South Bronx by performing tasks that included beautifying the trails, spreading mulch sanding/painting, pruning, weeding, planting, and general upkeep throughout the entire park. This project engaged 100 to 120 volunteers on that beautiful sunny day getting things prepped for major park use. This was an awesome day.
