Maisy twists her wrist out from under Sorcha's fingers before she could touch the faint, pale scar there. It feels a bit like having ice water poured over her head; she feels cold, and hollow, and ashamed. She struggles to find her voice again, can't look at Sorcha as she quietly says, "It's nothing. Just... some mishap in uni. I can barely remember it." That part, at least, was true.

who starts putting up decorations in october? Neither, but the decorations do come out in oct bc Maisy's started decorating the cafe.

who buys the advent calendars? Zach. Sorcha's usually has jewelry mixed with the chocolate. Church gets one too.

who places mistletoes all around the house? Zach, unquestionably.

who wraps the presents for other people? Mostly Zach, but Sorcha helps when they're for the people in her life.

who puts the final star/angel on the top of the christmas tree? Sorcha, mostly as an excuse for Zach to lift her.

who’s the one that hates eggnog? Sorcha. She'll make an exception for Maisy's eggnog, but only once or twice a season.

who’s the one that bakes christmas cookies for guests? Maisy. Zach brings them from the cafe.

who sends out the christmas cards? Sorcha. Her writing's prettier.

who knows all the words to twelve days of christmas? Zach, but he doesn't immediately admit it. It takes some doing to get it out of him, but one Stengaard Christmas and Sorcha understands why.

who’s the better snowman builder? Zach, but he doesn't particularly enjoy the endeavor.

who starts snowball fights? Zachary, unquestionably, nearly every time they're in the snow. Church loves it.

who’s the one that wakes the other on christmas morning by playing christmas songs really loudly? Zach knows better than to wake Sorcha early, but Sorcha learns quickly that Zach doesn't wait on Christmas morning, evidenced by Church chewing on a new toy already by the time she gets out of bed.

Maisy grins widely, carrying a bowl of dough and several cookie sheets out to where Sorcha is sitting. Stacked a little precariously on top of the cookie sheets are several dozen tins in a handful of different shapes. “I am going to teach you about the best part of Christmas – sandbakkel.” She sets everything on the table, settling into a chair. “They’re basically butter cookies, but so much better.”

She teaches Sorcha how to press the dough into tins, setting them on the waiting sheets. “We make these every Christmas,” she says. “I’m not allowed to help at home anymore because I eat too many of them, so I bake a whole bunch here where I can eat as many as I want.” She giggles, smiling widely at Sorcha. "We usually drop the tins in the snow to pop the cookies out, but it's possible to get them out otherwise, very carefully."

Her hands clenched, ice coating her palms. She took a deep breath to calm herself, forcing her hands to relax and the ice to melt again. “I haven’t asked for peace,” she said, voice carefully measured. “You’re an older sister. Would you not sacrifice peace for the safety of a younger sibling? Even if I have to fight my own mother for it.” And if rumors were to be believed, Sorcha knew what that was like, too.
