In Nepalese folklore, the Khyāh is a fat, hairy, ape-like creature, popular in children's stories and Hindu and Buddhist festivals.
Khyāhs are generally considered benevolent creatures, bringing good luck and filling homes with positivity. However, evil Khyāhs exist, who bring trouble. Household Khyāhs live in attics and storerooms, and are said to fear electric lighting.
Several specific types of Khyāh exist, including Bārāy Khyāh, who appear in rooms where girls are kept in seclusion during their rite of passage, Lanpan Khyāh, who block people's ways on dark streets, and Bhakun Gwārā Khyāh, who rolls around like a ball.
