The Current Overdiagnosis of HDHD in Children
#ADHD: Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. This word 'attention deficit' means lack of attention. Hyperactivity means extremely active. And a disorder is a physical or mental condition.
I believe that there's a current overdiagnosis of ADHD in children. Most kids who are diagnosed with this "condition", they are NOT hyperactive. They don't really have ADHD. They just have a lot of energy. And having high energy levels is NOT a medical condition; it's something normal, especially for boys who are the majority of ADHD cases. We should not look at a child and think that there's something wrong with him for being active. There's a natural explanation for that behavior.
First, boys are active, violent and aggressive by nature. This is a product of human evolution. Our ancestors had to be strong, they had to be violent, they had to be aggressive in order to survive. So we inherited these traits.
Second, some kids are kinesthetic learners. Meaning, they learn best by doing things, by moving. They have a hard time staying still because of that. They want to move, that's just how they learn.
Now, imagine this student: a BOY, who also happens to be a kinesthetic learner. It's hard to teach. We have some of these students and I can tell that it's quite a challenge. Instead of finding excuses for their behavior, it's our job as educators to be patient and help them improve self-control.
Why is ADHD being overdiagnosed? I'm not sure. But I suspect it's the #WarOnBoys that makes everybody look at them as toxic for being active. And the pharma industry is conveniently taking advantage of that. We won't see many experts come out and talk about this issue that is affecting boys in a very negative way. Our kids will grow up with a victim mentality, thinking that they can't achieve things in life because, since childhood, they've been told they have some kind of mental problem.
