I LOVED LOVED LOVED ‘Next Year In Havana’ by Cleeton and couldn’t wait to read her next book about Beatriz Perez, a really interesting character we saw glimpses of in the first book. However, this book about Beatriz’s life was just not up to scratch! It was pointlessly repetitive, boring and barely scratched the surface of Beatriz’s life as a spy and a human rights lawyer! The author has, instead, focused on Beatriz’s love life and just really tame shenanigans as a spy! There is a ton of details about the Cuban Missile Crisis (I don’t need to know more about it because I already know enough!)!!! Gah! The house has creepy legends of being haunted. Her charges- three girls under the age of 8- are not really happy to have her around. Mysterious footsteps sound above her bedroom all night, but her bedroom is on the topmost floor of the house... or so her employer claimed. Things start getting more and more sinister and then a child is found dead and the nanny is arrested. She claims she didn’t kill the child.. then who did? This was an interesting and really fast-paced, atmospheric thriller! You keep wondering if something supernatural is going on or is there some human involvement?! Also, is the plot sounds familiar, then you’re not imaging things, it is very, very similar to the classic- The Turn of the Screw by Henry James 😊. So, each book in the series follows the journey of each sister as she follows the clues left by their father. These books are historical fiction in terms of their genre as we get to see the lives of a female ancestor of each of the sisters. We get to follow the fifth sister- Tiggy’s- story as she sets off to find her birth family. Like the all the other books in the series, this is an interesting read as we get to see the lives of the Romani community in Spain during the Second World War as well as experience the Flamenco dancing community.
