"I sometimes wish you were a mermaid,
I could raise you in the tub at home.
We could take a swim together
on weekly day trips to the bay.
[...]
People say there are plenty of fish
in the sea, baby, all I do is wish..."
~ Milow, "You and Me"
This song was my inspiration for this drawing. I hope, you like it ☺
It took me about 7 hours to draw.
If you're interested in the backstory that I made up:
Once upon a time there was a koi girl named Brittle swimming in the sea. She went on an adventure to experience a part of her home she had never seen before. As she swam around a giant dark rock she saw a chubby merman with a greyish tail collecting shells near the ground. His hair was a bright orange just like the pattern on her own tail. “He looks cute”, she thought and swam a little closer. Suddenly he noticed her with a shocked glance and tried to swim away. She followed him, shouting to him that he didn't have to be afraid of her, but it took him a while to stop and turn around. “Wh-what do you want?”, he stuttered. “I just saw you by accident and thought that you looked cute with all your freckles and this interesting tail. What's your name?”, she asked. “Th-thank you”, he replied and blushed, “b-but there's nothing special about my tail. I'm just an ordinary salmon, just grey with dark spots. Y-your pattern is beautiful, if I may say so. I'm Marek, by the way.” “Thank you!”, she said, still fascinated by his appearance. “Do you want to come with me?” “Wh-what?” He looked really shocked. “H-how could a salmon boy go with a beautiful koi girl like you? Everyone will laugh at you. Shouldn't you look for a koi boy at your place?” “Are you joking? Everyone will envy me, at my place, there is no one with a grey pattern, you'll be very special! All those koi boys look quite the same at my home, but your tail is so unique! And don't forget it, in the end, I'm just a carp with an orange pattern. I'm nothing less 'ordinary' than you. And look, we even like the same kind of shells!” She pointed at the necklace around his neck, the pendant was a tiny orange shell. Brittle wore the same necklace, only her shell was a greenish grey. “Y-you're right! Well then, I'll go with you.” So they swam together, and as they arrived in Brittles village, everyone was amazed by Mareks foreign appearance. The two got married a few years later and they lived happily ever after.
