Kukur Tihar. Nepalese Hinduism is unique in dedicating the second day of Tihar to the worship of dogs.
Pashu Tihar - by Overcast
In Nepal, during Kukur Tihar, the relationships between humans and dogs are celebrated. The dogs are worshiped and revered during this annual autumn festival. A garland of flowers is draped around the neck of the dogs and a mark, tika, made from a red dye powder, along with rice and curd is applied to the forehead of each dog, those with home, and the strays as well. #kukurtihar #kukur #nepal #dogfestival #animalhumanbond #october24th2022✌🏽🐶🧡🧡🧡🐾📸 https://www.instagram.com/p/CkHpRgMoHfn/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
Kukur Tihar or Kukur Puja literally means the worship of dogs. This is a mini-festival within a larger Hindu celebration of Diwali, the festival of lights. Each day of the festival has different honourees to help acknowledge the deep connections between all things. During the festival of lights there are days devoted to crows, cows, dogs, oxen, and siblings. . Kukur Tihar is special to us because we love dogs! On that day, dogs in the community (even street dogs) are adorned with garlands, receive a tika (the special red mark on their forehead) and given food and treats! . The role of dogs in human life and throughout history is celebrated during Kukur Tihar. In the Rigveda, one of Hinduism’s most ancient texts, Samara, the mother of dogs, assists Indra, the ruler of heaven, in retrieving stolen cattle. Hindu tradition holds that a dog is the guardian and messenger of Yama, the lord and judge of the dead. A dog is also said to guard the gates of the afterlife. In 2020 we will be leading a group of volunteers on an expedition to Nepal! We are excited to announce that we will be there for Kukur Tihar so we can all participate in the blessing of dogs! . . . . . . #kukur #kukurtihar #Nepal #travelnepal #visitnepal #volunteer #doggos #volunteerwithdogs #grouptravel #expeditionnepal #liveyourdreams #xxleads #supportwomen #lovedogs #travelwithme #natgeotravel #travel #adventure #lovedogs #helpdogs #volunteertravel (at Kathmandu, Nepal) https://www.instagram.com/p/ByH-eyggFi5/?igshid=13n5089ujy4ne
