You had to stop yourself from rolling your eyes at the sound of the generic voicemail sounding through the phone for the third time, hanging up before you suffered through the rest of it this time.
‘call me anytime, i’ll answer
You could’ve sworn that’s what Kuroo told you after walking you back to your apartment just a week ago, but with each call, he didn’t answer you started to get worried that maybe he didn’t mean what he said.
He’d put his number in your phone himself, so you knew it wasn’t your fault for mishearing him. You couldn’t stop yourself from thinking that maybe he was just ignoring you even though he didn’t seem like the type. He was so eager when you agreed to take his number.
“Screw it.” You sighed, slouching against the seat at the bar, fingers ghosting against the cold rim of your glass.
No matter how hard you tried to scrub Kuroo’s name from your head it didn’t work though, the last time you were at this bar he was with you after all. The seat to your right felt even more empty than it did before he joined you.
You were half expecting him to be there when you walked in there, not bothering to ask one of your friends if they wanted to go out. You were regretting that now.
“Want another?”
You looked up at the bartender, contemplating for only a moment how long you’d stay here moping at the bar.
“Sure,” You started, voice a bit quieter than you meant it to come out. “Might be my last though.”
“Just let me know, there’s no rush we’re open all night.” She responded with a soft smile like she knew you’d been waiting for someone to show.
She was right too, the thought of seeing his dopey smile again was the only thing that held you stuck in the hard barstool at the bar.
The new drink sat on the bar in front of you for a minute before you even touched it, lost within your thoughts instead.
You’d seen Kuroo in a couple of your classes before running into him at the bar. The few times the two of you fought to get the right answer out faster to your professor’s questions had you hooked already, there was something interesting in how he challenged you in class.
Last weekend was the first time you actually spoke to him though.
The shared glances that seemed to last forever in class amounted to nothing compared to the conversations you had. From the first moment he wandered up to you at the bar you cursed yourself out for your heart beating faster than you thought it should.
“Oh, thank god.”
It took you a long moment for your attention to break away from the bar top, eyes flicking to the person leaning against the bar next to you now, and for a moment you almost wondered just how strong the bartender had been making your drinks.
“What are you doing here?” You asked, mouth slightly agape as you stared at the exact person you’d been thinking of for the past week, tone stuck between relief and a cold touch.
Kuroo stared at you for a minute, and it was so hard to read his face. Your own feelings spilled over into what you thought you saw stirring in his eyes.
“Why didn’t you answer me?” Your tone leaned more towards a cold distance now, “I called you three-”
“I think I gave you the wrong number.” He interrupted, and all you could do was blink a few times, trying to process what he said.
“Huh?”
“Last week I messed up the last two digits of my number,” He said once more, hand rubbing the back of his neck now and you could tell it took everything in him to keep looking at you. A soft hue of pink drifting across his cheeks now made your heart speed up just like the first time you met. “I’m sorry-”
“You’re kidding.”
“Um.. what?” He asked, eyes wide now as if he was scared you were mad despite the way your shoulders sank in relief and how you leaned back against the bar stool.
“I was really hoping something like this happened.” You said, the corner of your lips tugging into a soft smile at him. “You seemed pretty eager to talk to me last week, I thought it was weird you’d been ignoring my calls.”
“For a couple days I thought you ghosted me too.” Kuroo laughed, finally taking a seat next to you. “You’re not mad? I know it was pretty stupid of me.”
“Not at all, it’s kind of funny.”
“You need something?” The bartender came up to you again, looking at him this time and he nodded quickly. “Your usual?”
“You bet.” He answered quickly, smiling as the bartender left to make his drink. “So, can I give you my actual number now?”
“Let me call you right now actually so that I know you’ve got my number.” You slid your phone over for him to type it in, “I don’t want to call a random number a bunch of times again.”
Once the two of you finally had the right numbers, it felt as if a weight fell lifted your shoulders.
“Do you want to go out tomorrow?” He asked after a couple sips of his drink, eyes locked onto you as he waited for an answer. “I wanted to ask you this week, but you know..”
“Yes, I’d love that.” You smiled, meeting his gaze for the first time. The burning creeping up the back of your neck was hard to ignore now, especially as his eyes lit up at your answer. “Don’t ignore me this time.”
Your teasing only made his faint blush grow redder, but he nodded eyes crinkling at the corners as he smiled brightly.
you’ve always had this beautiful smile. one that would light up your eyes, teeth barely exposed by your lips, telling him that he was an idiot. kuroo would do all sorts of things just to see you smile, laugh, look his way if only for a second. you never seemed to do it otherwise, your gaze always shifting from him.
“i never get it right,” you grumbled, catching strands of hair as you removed the hair tie to try again. he had watched you for some time now, sitting on the chair by his desk, homework long forgotten, with his chin propped up on his palm.
“what are you even trying to do,” kuroo wondered, chuckling, furrowing his eyebrows when you released your hair from another attempt to put them up in a bun. the scowl on your face hinted at your frustration, head turning away from the mirror next to his bed with a pout.
“a messy bun,” you explained, releasing the grip on your hair. you were cute that way, hair all messy, pouty face that made him want to pinch your cheeks. “why’re you staring at me like that?”
“you’re adorable getting worked up over your hair.” he smirked as you raised an eyebrow at him.
“you’re one to talk, rooster head.”
“yeah yeah, i can’t get rid of my bedhead hair, i’m coming to terms with it,” he grinned, grabbing an eraser from his desk to throw it at you lightly.
you caught it with ease, and then smiled that beautiful smile of yours. the soft glow of the afternoon sun coming in through the window highlighting it as though you smiling was all he needed to see in this moment.
kuroo knew he was crushing on you, hard, his first friend he had made after kenma in middle school. but he had always had that crush on you, your cheerful attitude, carefree demeanor inspiring him, though you matured enough to know better now.
“maybe sleep like a normal person, then,” you sneered, throwing the eraser back at him. you missed, hitting the door next to him instead.
“you suck.”
“YOU suck,” you retorted, turning back to his mirror to try again. “jerk..” that’s when he appeared behind you, his taller frame looming over you. kuroo liked the way you curiously peered up at him in the mirror, the question unspoken on your tongue. grabbing your hands, he took away the hair tie, pulling at it until your locks gathered around your shoulders, covering the skin of your neck he so itched to touch.
you didn’t know what he was doing. he didn’t even know what he was doing, but his fingers found your sides regardless, soft touches prickling on your sensitive skin that had you curl up instinctively, laughter bursting through your lips.
“no! please—STOP,” you half-shrieked, half-laughed, trying to escape the tickles that didn’t seem to stop. it really didn’t and at some point you had tried to forcefully jump on his bed to escape him, to no avail.
but you were lying below him now, tears catching on your lashes as you gasped for air, clutching his shoulders to push him off of you. he had always played dirty, knowing all your weaknesses and exploiting them when you least expected it.
what you didn’t expect was the sudden realization that the tickling had stopped, but kuroo lying on top of you made it hard to breathe, hard to stop laughing—what the hell was going on?
“tetsu—please, i can’t—can’t breathe,” you nearly cried, laughing. confused but still grinning, he propped himself up on his elbows, watching you laugh and cry with adoration. no, wait—he probably shouldn’t be so close, trapping you between his knees like a boyfriend would his girlfriend. he got carried away..
you were just friends, nothing more, just—
your grip on his shoulders didn’t ease up when he tried to get up. he looked at you, his usual lopsided smirk faltering, softening in confusion, his eyes squinting slightly as though to understand. but your face was a mess, a beautiful, stunning mess. looking up at him with heated cheeks, tears in your eyes and labored breaths escaping your parted lips. he clutched the bedsheets on either side of your head.
shit.
“be good now?” kuroo asked, his voice low and you nodded, though you had no idea what he was referring to anymore.
there was only him, his messy bedhead hair that made him appear even taller than he was, his golden eyes that were so sharp and cunning that you didn’t dare to stare into them for too long. his shoulders that felt so hot under your touch. you couldn’t stand the thought of separating now.
you’ve been friends for so long now, but starting high school your heart had started to beat more rapidly in his presence, heating your cheeks, having you avoid his gaze to not give away your feelings. he would just make fun of you—
kuroo shifted slightly, trying to move off of you but your hold on him confused him, making him hesitate which is why one of his legs got caught between yours, grazing the exposed skin by chance.
the sudden sound you let out made him clench his jaw, the soft whimper resonating in his ears as he tried to meet your gaze but you had turned your head to the side, exposing your beautiful, slender neck.
just what the hell were you doing to him..
“yeah, sorry,” he murmured, again trying to get up but you just wouldn’t let him. so then he decided to pinch the exposed skin between shirt and skirt of your school uniform, making you jump.
“hey!—”
“let go off me?” kuroo asked amusedly, hiding the fact that his heart was trying to beat out of his chest with a coy grin. but you shook your head shyly, and he blinked. what?
“just..” you began, quietly, gaze still averted, “just a bit longer?”
his muscles relaxed, tension easing up as he processed your words, taking in your flustered appearance. he didn’t really understand, he didn’t want to get his hopes up. after all, you had just mentioned that you liked somebody the other day, so why would you—
ah.
oh.
“hmm,” he hummed, letting him fall next to you, his other arm and leg still an extra weight on you. he stared at you, observed the little changes in your expression, the way you desperately tried to hide the fact that you were blushing, hard.
smirking, he poked your cheek with the tip of his nose and you began to hold your breath.
“so.. when are you gonna confess?”
this time your eyes darted to his, finally meeting them, with surprise, your chest hot with embarrassment. you furrowed your brows, feeling your face heat up even more as you grabbed a pillow, stuffing it in his face and growled, “never!”
“You’re drunk,” Kuroo spoke, a smile on his lips. He wasn’t completely sober either, but he wasn’t nearly as drunk as you were.
“Maybe,” You giggled, crawling across the couch to lay your head in his lap.
You smiled up at him and reached for his hand. He obliged, his forearm across your chest. You played with his hand, rubbing gently up and down his palm and fingers. There was the ghost of a smile on your lips the whole time, the alcohol working in your system to make you all bubbly.
“Can I kiss you?” You asked, already moving to sit up.
“Sorry munchkin, no.” He said, although the smile never left his lips. He always found you attractive, but he couldn’t deny that he found the giddy, clingy you adorable.
You pouted, bottom lip jutted out and eyebrows pinned. A huff left you as you moved to lean against his shoulder. You knew why he didn’t want to kiss you; you wouldn’t want to kiss someone who had thrown up fifteen minutes ago either.
“Please,” you whined. Your hand came down to intertwine with his as you buried your face in his shoulder.
“Have you rinsed your mouth?” He asked, taking pity. Maybe it was because he also wanted to kiss you, but he wasn’t about to tell you that.
“Yes.”
“And brushed your teeth?”
“Yes.”
He smiled, reaching to grab one of your legs and pull it over his lap, “Then kiss me.”

You panted heavily as you ran through the woods, the branches of the trees scratching at your skin. The voices shouting curses at you rang loudly in your ears, and you could see the fire from their torches lighting your path from behind you. You forced your legs to run faster, you ran until your lungs burned. You ran until you could no longer see the illumination of the burning flames, and there was nothing but darkness and stillness. Once you were sure you were far away enough, you leaned back, resting against a large tree. Your chest heaved, but you tried your best to keep your breathing quiet in fear that someone might hear you.
“There’s nowhere to run (Y/n).”
You froze at the familiar voice.
The sweet angelic voice that plagued your mind like a sick disease. The voice that whispered words of sweet nothings in your ears as he took away whatever purity you had left in you. The voice that told you he loved you, despite knowing what you were. The voice that promised you that nothing would happen to you as long as he was next to you.
“Tetsurou,” you softly whispered, your chest clenched.
The torch he held lit up the dark night, giving you a perfect view of his face. Despite being covered in the blood of your close friends, he still looked as beautiful as the first day you met him by the lake just outside of the village. Your friends, Suguru and Naoyasu, warned you. They warned you about the dangers of creating close ties with those outside your inner circle. Because everyone who didn’t understand the way of witches, feared them and wanted them dead.
“You lied to me.” your voice trembled, “I thought… I thought you—”
“And like you said,” he said, taking a step closer to you, “I was lying.”
He walked closer towards you and you let him. Fear engulfed your body, but you couldn’t find it in you to move a single muscle. You let him get so close to you that you could feel the heat from the fire torch touch your skin.
“I made a promise to my father, and the people of the village, that I would rid this town of witches.” his lips curled ever so slightly as he raised his hand close to your face, his fingers softly stroking your cheek, “And you, (Y/n), you’re the last one.”
“‘Rid the town of witches,’” you mimicked him, “Tetsurou, you know our secrets.” your voice was quiet, but rang loudly in his ears.
“You know the work we do for the village, and you know our true intentions,” your voice began to raise with every word, “You’ve seen me do it!”
Tears began to form in your eyes as you looked up to meet his gaze, and tried to find him. You tried to find the Tetsurou that fell into fits of laughter after you casted a spell allowing his three cats to speak to him. You tried to find the Tetsurou that would steal kisses from you every time he caught you walking alone at the marketplace. You tried to find the Tetsurou that lovingly held you close as he left traces of his lips all over your body, the Tetsurou that looked at you so lovingly. But you couldn’t.
His eyes that once sparkled when he teased you, were dark and dull. He was no longer the Tetsurou you came to know… but for some reason, your heart still beat as your eyes traced his features.
You still loved him.
You reached into your satchel, pulling out the dagger that he had gifted you so that you could protect yourself. How ironic, it was. You removed the sheath as you took his hand and curled his fingers around the handle.
“If I’m going to die tonight,” you said, holding his hand with both of yours, you angled the dagger to your abdomen, “Then at least let me die by your hands.”
Tetsurou’s demeanor wavered as you looked up at him, your eyes still the same as the first day he met you, full of admiration and curiosity. The same eyes that looked at him as if he was the only one that mattered to you, despite the world being filled with billions of people. The eyes that held so much love that Cupid himself would be jealous. He felt his heart go heavy for a second, before he clenched his fist around the dagger pointed at you. You brought one of your hands up to stroke the side of his face, your loving gaze stirring up a sudden anger in the pit of his stomach.
“If I die by your hands, then at least the last thing I’ll see is the face of the person I love.”
As soon as the words left your mouth, he let out a cry of anger as he tossed his torch to the ground, the small flame slowly engulfing its surroundings. He pulled his hand away from your grip, the sharp edge of the knife gliding across your skin. You winced as you felt the warm blood pool and trickled down your wrist. Before you could even look up at Tetsurou, he grabbed you by your shoulder, slamming you back into the tree behind you. This time he held the dagger on his own, the edge of it lightly pressed against your neck.
“Stop fucking doing that.” he sneered, his grip on your shoulder tightened.
You breathed softly, your smile never leaving your face.
“Tetsu,” you cooed at him, “I’m not doing anything.”
“Yes, you are!” he screamed at you, “You’re using your magic to mess with my head, to make me think that I… that I’m—” he paused, his breathing unsteady.
“That you what?” your soft whispers echoed in his ear like a chant. The fire from his torch grew stronger, lighting up the darkness that surrounded the two of you, the voices from the villagers echoed in the background, heading in your direction— but you didn’t care, your eyes never left his. When the light from fire hit his face, you felt your heart swell as you could see the traces of tears brimming his beautiful brown eyes, and you smiled.
He still loved you.
“The eyes are the gates to the soul. They will always reveal a person’s true feelings, no matter how hard they try to mask it.” Suguru had once told you.
Kuroo Tetsurou loved you. He still does, but he’s torn between his love for you and his duty to the village. Naoyasu had always told you that you were too selfless for your own good, and that it would one day be the death of you. And perhaps he was right.
Both of your hands came up to cup your lover’s face, his hand that held the dagger slowly dropping to his side. You leaned in close to him, your thumbs gently stroking the apples of his cheeks, and your eyes scanning his face to memory, before looking up to meet his eyes once more.
“I love you too.” you whispered against his lips, before closing the distance between the two of you. The kiss was as soft as the wind on the day you first met. It was as gentle as the first time he laced his fingers through yours, holding your hand in his, yet at the same time, it was as passionate as the first night you spent together. But alas, all good things must come to an end.
The shouts of the villagers were louder than ever, and when you pulled away, you gave Tetsurou no time to react. You went for the dagger in his hands, twisting it out of his grasp. Without any hesitation, you plunged it deep into your chest, and then everything was a haze.
Your vision went out of focus, and you could barely make out Tetsurou’s face as you felt your body hit the cold ground. Sounds of muffled screams and cries of your name filled your ears, as you felt feather-like touches all over your face. Before you finally let go of your consciousness, you forced yourself to focus your vision on Tetsurou, your Tetsu, one last time. He looked at you with furrowed brows as his eyes glistened with tears. This time he didn’t hold them back, letting them roll freely down his face, as he called out for you.
Your story wasn’t a fairy tale. You knew from the moment you realized you fell in love with Tetsurou, that you were destined for a tragic ending.
You were a witch after all, and he was a witch hunter.

Kuroo can’t help but to smile as he watches you work on your homework, a groan leaving you as you erratically erase whatever you had just written down. “I can help you, you know,” he offers, that usual smirk of his on his face. You don’t even have to look up from your work to know that it’s there.
“Nope. I’m good. I can do it,” you reply confidently before starting to work on the problem for the third time. Hey, third time’s the charm, right?
Kuroo only chuckles at you before going quiet, gleefully going back to watching you trying to figure it out. Your brows are practically knitted together, your nose is wrinkled, and, occasionally, you’ll chew on the end of your pencil. He definitely uses that as an excuse to stare at your mouth.
You two just started being study buddies a couple of weeks ago, so he hasn’t worked up the nerve to kiss you or ask you out yet, but he will. One day.
[11:59 PM] the gentle patter of the rain outside is interrupted by the buzzing of your phone atop your desk.
incoming call from kuroo tetsurou.
“what’s up?” you greet, biting your lip to hide a smile.
“hey. so, uh, if i have to take a call from this guy i’m doing research with in germany at 9 am his time, what time is that in japan?” his deep voice choppily flows through the speaker.
what? “uhm,” you stutter, “i’m not really sure myself. why?”
a pause. “my google’s not working.”
with a sigh, you switch screens from the essay you’re writing and type “9 am germany to japan time” into the search engine.
“4 pm japan time,” you say a few seconds later. “why’d you call? you could’ve texted.”
there’s a pause on the other side, then the sound of someone else’s familiar laughter.
“yeah i probably could’ve,” he muses. “thanks, y/n.” another pause. some hushed whispers. “love you.”
blinking in shock, you let out a nervous chuckle. “uh, love you too, tetsu.”
another faint chorus of laughter echoes through the speakers before the call ends. what was that about?
[11:57 PM] the nekoma boys are having a sleepover at their captain’s house to celebrate the end to their season.
the jenga tower finally collapses as kuroo tetsurou withdraws his hand. a cold wave of dread washes over him as he realises what this means.
“the rules are simple,” he remembers yaku saying. “if you make the tower fall, you have to tell your crush you love ‘em.”
a sly grin grows on inuoka’s face. “you know the drill.”

it was a playful fight between your boyfriend and your friend, kuroo was stretching over you to smack lev, the two giggling as you felt yourself sink back against the couch, the fear of being caught in the crossfire doubling when kuroo practically sat on top of you.
“i’m gonna throw your annoying ass out of this house.” kuroo’s words lacked credibility as he smiled at lev, who had backed up against the arm of the couch.
“kuroo can you sit down plea-” of course, with the way that lanky giant was thrashing, you getting knocked in the face wasn’t an irrational thought. clearly.
you hold your cheek as you glare up at him, pouting as he scrambles off of you, removing your hand to cup your cheek with his own larger one.
“baby i am so sorry, are you okay?”
you sigh, leaning into his touch. “i hate the both of you.”
