We're moved out of the brooder now. They were getting to big for my bantams. They hadn't hurt them or anything but the size difference was getting a bit absurd.
Terabyte doesnt mind the leghorns they have cozy butts

it’s kinda crazy how different the labhorns look even to my untrained eye. like yeah their basic shape is the same as any chick, but their feathers are so uniformly colored and clean (which i swear also makes them just a tad fluffier?) and their eyes stands out so crisply from the rest of their face. it’s very easy to believe these chicks come from a meticulously sculpted genetic line (and epigenetic “line” too, i suppose, since lab animal treatment guidelines are very strict.)
They really do! They also grow faster then the other birds. My landlady has large fowl chicks that are older then the leghorns by a few days but the leghorns are still twice their size

College students were studying embryology using these chick's eggs. Basically the eggs were candled often, injected with dye, and had their development tracked until hatching. The eggs/chicks come from a lab strain of leghorns that are cared for by the animal science students. Lab strains of chicken breeds are often bred to maintain high genetic diversity or highly inbred to establish specific uniform lines for research purposes. Im pretty sure these guys have been bred for uniformity but I could be wrong! They arent one of the cancer lines though so I welcome either extreme uniformity or genetic diversity.
The chicks were completely free and they are straight run so we got potential cockerels in the bunch. They do this often in my area but its kind of hush hush so they dont get swarmed by people who wont actually care for the chicks. This is the first time I got sent the link needed to sign up :p
