"The secod question is easier to answer than the first. So, if we reduce the work week in the US for instance from 40 to 24 hours, the imapct would be the same as the impact of 40% unemployment. In this case, however, there would be no unemployment and no loss of income for the working class. Instead, the existing distribution of the total social product would now be replaced by one that favors the working class. Two ways this would be expressed: first, reducing hours of work would have the same effect on wages as a sudden negative supply shock to the labor market -- wages would be forced up rather swiftly. On the other hand, it would the effect of swiftly reducing the production of surlus value (profits). The net effect of this would make the the profitability of unnecessary labor materially untenable. This would hit the state most significantly, since it is the single largest consumer of unnecessary labor time.
