Closer to the Heart

Summary: Luke really doesn’t mean to interrupt Alex and Willie’s date. It’s just that he forgot his notebook somewhere in the studio, and he has a really killer lyric that he needs to write down before he forgets it.

He’s really only planning to pop in and out, maybe say hi to Willie, and then be on his way. But the thing is, when Luke lands in the studio Alex and Willie are cuddled up on the couch, and Willie…

Willie is wearing Luke’s Rush cutoff.

Willie laughs which lights Luke’s chest up on the inside. If they were other, more normal, less screwed-up people, Luke might worry about whether his feelings are betraying Alex somehow. But he and Alex are just as inextricable. Luke can’t imagine Alex being angry about this; if anything, it only makes sense. Willie matters to Alex. The transmission of that caring was always going to happen one way or another.

Luke closes the distance. Putting his guitar down to the side, he leans over to rest his head on Willie’s shoulder. He feels, more than hears, Willie’s sharp intake of breath, the way Willie tenses and then goes gooey and soft.

Or, Luke and Alex had a falling out that caused Sunset Curve to break up. Several years later, Luke goes to college at his parent's insistence and meets Willie...and his boyfriend Alex.

Summary: In his twenty-three years of life, Luke has never once had a reason to question any of Bobby’s rules. Bobby’s rules are the reason the rest of the band has stayed alive so long. But there’s one rule that drives Luke up the wall, and it’s that Bobby won’t date anyone that doesn’t get along with his cat.

Which would be fine; it’s great that Bobby has standards, and that he won’t end up with some cruel, cat-hating monster. The issue is that Luke wants to date Bobby.

The bigger issue is that Sir Elton Shaw is a cruel, Luke-hating monster.
