this is my headcanon for dimitri's birth mother! not much is known about her, other than she had a 'weak constitution' and passed away from the plague not long after dimitri was born. I wrote a few points above, but i've expanded on some of them beneath the cut!
Appearance: I imagine her to be a tall woman with long legs. I think her legs are more on the muscular side from years of horseback riding. I gave her red hair and brown eyes, like her twin brother.
Class: Freya is terrible at magic. She's practiced with the bow.
Monach Territory was North of Fhirdiad and West of Gautier territory. It was absorbed into Gautier Territory a few centuries prior, when the Monachs submitted to the Gautiers due to a decline in power in an attempt to keep their house afloat. While still technically a noble line, they are considered a smaller, dying one, noble in name only.
They do have crests in their family, which is likely the only reason they haven't dissolved entirely. Freya possesses a crest, as does her brother – which is exceedingly rare.
Her mother was very sickly, and often got more and more confused as she aged. By the time Freya was an adult, she was confused more often than she wasn't. It progressively gets worse every year.
She had no idea that she wasn't fully a Fodlander or that she had a brother. She believed she was an only child, the daughter of her mother's late husband. When her brother Forgall appeared, she learned the truth – she was a twin, and her father had been a man from Sreng. When they were born, he took her brother and left. Her brother came to Fodlan because unlike Freya, Forgall knew who his mother had been.
Forgall was shrewd, ambitious, and tactical. Freya was worn out from years of caring for their mother and maintaining the house alone. The idea of inheriting it felt more like a burden than a blessing. She was all too willing to give up her named birthright and give it to Forgall, her elder twin. He accepted, and she felt lighter immediately. For her, the idea of marrying elsewhere and moving on felt more peaceful than leading a house she felt she couldn't save. Forgall, on the other hand, seemed eager to do so.
Being a noble, Freya is not at all improper – but she is somewhat less refined than her peers, due to growing up in relative isolation so far up north. What this means is she is sometimes a bit too familiar with people, though it is never intentionally rude.
She was very dear friends with Matthias Gautier's first wife. Because they were a smaller family in their territory and winters were harsh, Matthias was always attentive to making sure they were well supplied. When Miklan was born, Freya helped his wife recover and spent much time with them. As a result of their friendship, Matthias was incredibly suspicious of Forgall's intentions when Freya gave up her inheritance to him, and investigated the matter to make sure he didn't manipulate her.
Those who knew Freya all spoke of her talent in storytelling. In another life, they say she would have been a bard. She's animated, descriptive, captivating, and makes the most mundane things seem like adventures.
Eventually, when word got out that a man from Sreng appeared seemingly out of nowhere and successfully footed himself into the noble class, all sorts of rumors flew – not just about Forgall, but about Freya, too. They called her weak, simple, and foolish for giving up her house to a man that many called a foreigner. Lambert was certainly curious about it, but had not yet made any formal gestures to acknowledge or condemn it. They had a mutual friend in Matthias, and he by chance met Freya while visiting them there.
At that meeting, he hinted what he'd heard through the grapevine, and Freya seized the opportunity to tell their story from her own perspective. Where more people would do their best to bury the mystery and scandal surrounding the matter, Freya told the story as if it were an adventure – whether Lambert was captivated by her colorful story of the mysterious man from Sreng and the torrid affair between a noblewoman and a chieftain, or simply by her beauty and personality is unknown. What is known is that not long after that, Lambert made gestures to actually meet the members of a house he previously had no interest in, and ended up befriending Forgall and acknowledging him as a member of their family, thus legitimizing his role as the Marquis Monach.
Eventually, he and Freya fell madly in love and started an affair. While it was not unheard of for an unmarried king to have one or several mistresses, what was particularly scandalous about this one was that it lead to a hesitance to marry after his coronation. He continued to put off his wedding to his fincee and childhood friend, Enora, and to the public he seemed to suddenly break off his lifelong engagement and marry a woman that many hadn't heard of. Because she both possessed a Crest and a title, there was little anyone could do to stop him, but it was still highly unusual and not well received by many of the upper class. This is also likely part of why he kept his second marriage a secret.
Dimitri was born just shy of seven months after their wedding. Officially, they say he was premature. But he was a very healthy baby, and people in their innermost circles were able to do the math. Being born that early was either a miracle, or she was with child before their wedding.
After barely three years of marriage, Freya succumbed to the plague. A devastated Lambert led her funeral procession on foot when she died.
Both Ionius IX & Lambert lost their life to rebelling nobles when they tried to issue reforms & concentrate more power to the Throne
And then the subsequent trauma potentially pushes their children to take over the entire continent :))) amassing more power & territories than any other leader in over 435 years :))))))))))
