Lance pulled away from his friends and stared at them all with wide eyes. They weren’t looking after… him? Keith seemingly sensed his question as his eyes darkened and he looked away. Pidge stood beside Hunk, their eyes piercing as they clutched their hands together, unsure of how to act. Hunk himself watched Lance with wide, caring eyes that were slightly red from crying. Lance fought the urge to comfort his friend.
“Sh- he went on a rampage after we got you away from him. We had to contain him, and it took a while. I’m sorry we weren’t there for you” Keith said, breaking the thick silence. His eyes met Lance’s, and the other boy smiled. The absence of Shiro himself was blatant. Allura, who watched her team with a small smile, stood slightly to the side, a gap between herself and Keith the exact size of Shiro.
Coran’s hand touched Lance’s shoulder and the boy flinched and ripped himself away from the Altean, fear rising into his throat as his mind screamed at him to run, run and never turn around because he was behind him and he was going to hurt him. The fear still clung to him as he told himself over and over that it was Coran behind him, that he was safe, that Shiro was gone…
“Where is Sh- he?” Lance asked quietly, hating the way the others hovered around him, unsure of how to proceed with the terror that still clung to him.
“He’s in a high security cave in the bowels of the castle. He won’t escape.” Coran said quietly, hands coming to clasp in front of him, in plain sight, Lance noted to himself. “The matter I wanted to bring up, however… Lance, when… he… was trying to… kill you, his robotic hand became hot. Extremely hot.”
Lance’s hands drifted to his neck, terror filling his eyes as his fingers brushed against bumps and ridges. Hand-shaped bumps and ridges. Scars, Lance’s brain supplied, and suddenly his breaths came short and fast as panic clawed at his throat and suddenly there was a hand wrapped around his neck and he was burning and his skin was melting and he was dying and-
“Lance! Lance, you’re okay. Lance you’re safe.” Hunk repeated over and over, and Lance shook his head, eyes meeting the soft, comforting eyes of Hunk.
“I’m sorry, I just…” Lance trailed off, voice quiet, shaky.
“Don’t apologize. Don’t.” Hunk replied vehemently, and Lance flinched at the loudness of his voice before nodding quickly, shaking still wracking his body.
Lance’s eyes fell onto the mirror and he stopped dead. His neck was uncovered, the thick band of scarring wrapping around his neck, the distinct shape of fingers outlined by a darker line of skin bright. Too bright. Lance felt his stomach rising as he looked at the hand, his mind able to perfectly see Shiro’s hand wrapping around his neck, his eyes amused at the panic filling Lance.
Lance pulled his sweat shirt closer to his neck and shook his head. The more he thought of Hunk’s words about Haggar, the more they made sense. He couldn’t shake the idea that something was wrong with Shiro now, even as panic rose at the very idea of the Black paladin. Lance shook his head and took a deep, unsteady breath.
“Strength doesn’t lie in lacking fear.” Lance whispered, Red’s words bringing comfort to him as he closed his eyes and took another deep breath. Lance had to confront him.
“Well, well, well, I’m surprised you aren’t hiding like a hurt puppy.”
The words were deep, calculated, and rung through the dark room as Lance slipped into the cell block. Fear gripped Lance, his voice failing him as he tried not to freeze, to think of what exactly had happened to him less than a day ago.
As the light blinked on, Lance watched Shiro as he rose from the ground and stared Lance down with an amused, predatory smirk. His eyes were dark and smeared with a bright red that was illuminated in the sterile lights.
Terror filled lance as he remembered the amusement, the laughter that had filled Shiro as he had choked him, as he had tried to-
“You tried to kill me.” Lance stated, his voice shaking. He looked small; his body folded in on himself, his eyes wide with terror, his hands trembling. His face was pale as he watched the other man stare him down, eyes instantly amused.
“I failed too. Foolish mistake. I won’t make it a second time.” Shiro quipped, and Lance flinched at the thinly veiled promise. The old Shiro had completely disappeared and now, standing before him, was the Galran Champion. He was a predator, his eyes never leaving Lance nor blinking as he stalked with fluid grace towards the Red paladin. His steps were near silent on the smooth, metallic floor, a stark contrast to the soldier-like steps he had taken towards Lance in the training room, the clang that had sounded with each step bringing closer an impending death.
“What happened to you?” Lance whispered as he backed towards the door. His hand landed on the opening but it was locked. fuck. He hadn’t told anyone what he was going to do, because he knew they wouldn’t let him. The small, rational part of his brain knew they were smart. He wasn’t ready to confront this. He wasn’t ready to confront Shiro. And yet his mind was still running on fear, and as Shiro approached him, he knew he was screwed.
The other man came to a halt at some invisible barrier, his robotic hand lifting to touch the glass that separated himself from Lance. “I woke up. I’m finally back. It’s funny, really. Shiro was hurt badly when he landed on earth, and I couldn’t wake up. But now I’m here, and Shiro is gone.”
Lance pressed himself against the door as Shiro’s robotic hand flared to life. Why was he talking about himself as though he wasn’t Shiro? What the hell was happening? What happened to Shiro? Shiro pressed a finger against the glass, the pure heat of his activated robotic hand melting the glass.
Lance’s hands flew to his neck as memories of the searing heat of Shiro’s arm pressing against his neck pressed to the front of his mind, and he fought against the rising panic as the alarms began blaring. It would take approximately five minutes for the team to run to the bridge and scan the area around the castle for hostile ships before realizing the threat was within and run to the prison bay. Lance prayed he could last that long as he watched the glass finally melt completely through in the shape of Shiro’s finger.
“Sh- it’s me. It’s Lance,” the Cuban pleaded as he stared into Shiro’s eyes with terror, “Wake up! You have to wake up. Please.”
“Wake up? I’ve just woken up, Lancey Lance. I’m alive now.” Shiro cooed, his eyes bright with a horrible entertainment as he dragged his hand downwards, the glass cutting fast. Too fast.
“Look at me. Look at this.” Lance ripped the hood of his sweatshirt back, the thick, ugly scar where Shiro’s hand had burnt his flesh prominent.
“Look what you did to me. You tried to kill me. You tried to-” Lance’s words were cut off with a sob as he slid down the door, eyes lifting to the ceiling in a futile attempt to stop the tears that fell down his face.
“You’re weak, Lance McClain. Weak. You can’t even shrug off a simple scar. My arm was ripped from my body, McClain, and you don’t see me crying about it.” Shiro snarled as he ripped his hand from the glass. Two sides of a human-sized door were complete and only two minutes had passed.
“I wanted to watch. I wanted to see the life drain from your eyes, but I guess I’ll have to finish you off quickly this time. It’s a pity, really.” Shiro sighed as he began cutting into the glass again.
Lance’s breathing slowed as he watched Shiro cut through the glass. He was talking about his plans for the other paladins. He would make Hunk watch as he killed Pidge, Keith would… Lance shook his head and tried to clear his mind of the panic that filled him. If he wanted to live, he would have to surprise Shiro. He’d have to attack him as soon as he finished cutting through the glass.
Pushing himself upwards with shaky hands, he watched Shiro as he finished cutting through the third side of the door. Taking a deep, unsteady breath, Lance watched Shiro take a step back.
“Keith misses his brother.” Lance whispered, and Shiro stopped dead, his eyes bolting to Lance’s.
“Keith? Is he- doesn’t matter, I will kill him slowly, like I- tell him I’m sorry.” Shiro’s voice somehow shifted from confused and horrified to calculating and deadly and then back, his sentences shifting as though there was someone else- something else that was controlling him.
“Tell him yourself. Tell Keith yourself.” Lance urged, horror filling his voice as Shiro’s robotic arm deactivated then activated, then deactivated… and activated again.
“Keith will die. All of you will.” Shiro snarled, and Lance cursed to himself. Shiro stepped forward and Lance charged, his foot slamming into the glass and pushing it backwards into Shiro, who stumbled and dropped to the ground under the weight of the glass. Shiro’s head slammed against the floor, and his robotic arm deactivated.
“Lance? What- you impertinent fool, I’m going to watch you suffer.” Shiro snarled, his robotic arm activating and pushing upwards, the slab of glass flying off him and dropping to the side like a piece of trash.
Lance kicked Shiro in the side of the head as he rose, and the Black paladin whipped to the side, his eyes disoriented for a moment before he snarled and lunged, grabbing Lance by the waist and dragging him to the floor. His fist slammed into Lance’s face, his human fist thankfully much weaker than his robotic fist. Lance lifted his hands in a futile attempt to shield his face from Shiro’s robotic arm when suddenly the door was kicked open and Keith dragged Shiro back, his knife flush with Shiro’s neck.
“Move and you die.” Keith whispered fiercely, his eyes dark as he pinned Shiro against the wall, knife never leaving the Black paladin’s neck.
“What the hell were you thinking Lance? He was going to kill you.” Keith snarled, eyes not moving away from Shiro.
“It’s not… It’s not him.” Lance whispered as he pushed himself up. “There’s something controlling him.”
“Fuck that Lance. He tried to kill you. Twice. Why do you care so much?” Keith hissed, and Lance looked away.
“He matters more than me, Keith. Even if it meant dying, I had to help him.” Lance said finally, and Keith finally ripped his eyes away from Shiro to stare incredulously at Lance. It was the worst mistake he could have made. With almost lightning speed, Shiro disarmed Keith and threw him backwards, his human arm dangling the Galran knife as it morphed into its full size.
“I’m looking forward to killing you now.” Shiro said with a smile as he watched the two of them with dark eyes.
“It’s Keith. Are you going to kill him? Your brother?” Lance whispered, and Shiro furrowed his brow in confusion. The Galran knife morphed into its smaller form and dropped to the ground as his robotic hand deactivated.
“Keith? Keith what’s happening?” Shiro asked, his voice completely different. Keith turned to Lance, eyes wide in confusion, and Lance nodded.
“Shiro, there’s something wrong with you. I need you to fight it. Fight it.” Keith urged, and Shiro shook his head, hands lifting to his temples in confusion.
“I don’t understand. What’s going on. Where are we? Keith what- make you watch as I gut him like a pig.” Shiro snarled, his robotic arm activating as he advanced towards them.
“Look at me.” Lance whispered as he pulled his shirt back to reveal the scar again. Shiro paused as his eyes traced the scar in confusion. He lifted his still-activated robotic arm and stared down at his hand. His eyes lifted again to Lance in horror as his robotic arm deactivated and tears filled his eyes.
“Lance, Lance I’m sorry, I’m so sorry,” He repeated again and again as he moved to help the bloodied Red paladin. Lance flinched away from him, terror filling his eyes again, and the Black paladin’s eyes filled with horror and he backed away.
