Frontiers of Pandora: Le'sohek te Sarentu Kataru'ite's Songcord, Zeswa Section

(Le'sohek doesn't know her family name yet, so she is not yet Le'sohek te Tamtey Kataru'ite. But here is a typed out version of the SECOND part of the physical songcord I've been making for her as I play through my new save.)

HEAVY SPOILERS FOR AVATAR FRONTIERS OF PANDORA'S MAIN GAME BELOW THE CUT!

Cording Change: Transitions to red, yellow, brown and dyed zakru wool cords Le’sohek collected, made and dyed while learning about zakru wool and its uses among the Zeswa.

- A longer bone bead wrapped with braided grass

Grass taken from around the exit of the cave Le’sohek used to get to the Upper Plains. She wove it around the bead while waiting for Nesim and Minang, watching all the new animals around and marveling at this new environment.

One seed for bonding with a direhorse for the first time.

- Carved and patterned bone bead

Given by Kìn for reaching the Circle on Direhorseback and meeting the Zeswa clan.

- A thin braid of zakru wool, decorated with yellow paint, yellow glass beads, and a small bone bead carved to resemble a zakru

The wool was taken, with permission, from Pasuk after Le’sohek helped to paint the young zakru and made a connection (not tsaheylu) with him. After painting him, Le’sohek sat beside Pasuk and told him of herself and the other Sarentu. She would return to him most nights when at the Circle to tell him of her adventures, never once minding that the zakru was asleep a vast majority of the time.

One seed bead for bonding with a Bladehead. A decent bit of time passes in this braiding, probably one to two weeks, as Le’sohek learns about and immerses herself in Zeswa culture and life as the Sarentu used to do.

Le’sohek cut this from the exopack of a dead RDA soldier after the in-game mission ‘Hunters Hunted.’ Horrified and enraged by the poaching Harding and her men were inflicting on the Upper Plains, Le’sohek let herself be lead by that anger and took one of the few ‘trophy’ type pieces found on her songcord, telling So’lek and the other Sarentu over the radio that if the RDA would take trophies from their world, then she would take trophies from them. For her, it more symbolizes the pain and absurdity of Harding’s black market, taking not only treasured things from the Na’vi and killing animals for sport and greed, but the most mundane pieces of Na’vi life being taken and exalted as things like ‘chieftain garb’ and ‘ceremonial object of great importance.’ Meanwhile it is literally just a basket, or a bit of pretty decoration. So Le’sohek takes something that symbolizes humanity’s non-native status on Pandora: A piece of the exopacks that they need to simply breathe on the moon’s surface.

Cording Change: The Zeswa cords are still present as the core, but lavender, sky blue, yellow and white cords of Kinglor silk are tied around the Zeswa core in a four strand round braid, covering them completely. This signifies that Le’sohek has left the Upper Plains and returned to the Kinglor Forest for a time, usually to check in with Resistance HQ in person and perform duties for and catch up with the friends she made within the Aranahe clan.

Taken from the Fortune Fruit she collected for Itu so they could say goodbye to and honor Zomey together.

Given by Etuwa as a thank you for carrying the first new Kinglor queen to her new nest. Le’sohek promises to come back and help with this again.

- A patterned long bone bead with a very dark emerald colored stone bead tied to the upper side

Found the materials for this bead inside and decorating both the half digested waist pouch and half digested chest strap that the severed thanator, Hunter Bravo, expelled upon its death. Hajir helped to clean the beads and sat with Le’sohek while she added it to her songcord, still paying penance for his part in the Severed’s creation and their pain.

Another thank you from Etuwa for carrying the second Kinglor queen to her new nest.

Cording Change: Back to the Zeswa cords, signifying Le’sohek has returned to the Upper Plains and life amongst the Zeswa.

- Knots akin to a two toned snake knot pattern

Taught by Kìn, as celebration for the first zakru milk cheese batch Le’sohek helped with being ready to eat. And, of course, celebration for Le’sohek trying zangke for the first time. Apparently Le’sohek can only tie these while somewhat inebriated.

Given to Le’sohek by Woai, who made it for her as thanks for helping Woai convince her father to teach her to ride Direhorses. Le’sohek added it to her songcord to remind herself that she does have some of the Sarentu’s gift of diplomacy and isn’t just an oddball warrior.

One seed bead for bonding with a Cloaked Panther. Le’sohek and Sìlron saved the life of this Panther when they saw a cage fall from a Samson that was fleeing after spotting them. The creature was badly injured despite Sìlron managing to catch the cage in his talons and the rough landing didn't help. Le’sohek had to bond with the Cloaked Panther to calm it and convey to it that they were not going to hurt it and that Sìlron would keep it safe while Le’sohek went to collect more medicinal plants. She treated its wounds and brought it to a Bellspring to help speed its recovery, and stayed with it for two days until another pack appeared and accepted the injured Panther into their family.

This Sarentu bow trinket was given to Le’sohek by Fa’zuk, as a thank you for helping her collect the kites she had released in her grief. Fa’zuk also gifted Le’sohek a Sarentu waistcloth that Le’sohek now wears daily, and Fa’zuk explained that she and her late mate, Naku, had a young Sarentu woman living alongside them and learning how to make their kites for two years before the Sarentu disappeared. The young woman left behind the waistcloth by accident when she left for the annual Sarentu Moot, and as her learning of the kites was not yet complete, the two kitemakers assumed she would return to the Zeswa for another year and kept it for her. Even as the years went on with no word and the zakru migrated, the two kept the trinket and waistcloth, refusing to give it to the Burden Carrier in the hopes that one day the woman would return. Fa’zuk passes it on to Le’sohek, a symbol of hope and renewed connection.

Found the materials for this bead inside and decorating both the half digested waist pouch and half digested chest strap that the severed thanator, Hunter Echo, expelled upon its death. Though he could not be there in person, Hajir asked to remain on an open radio channel with Le’sohek while she added this bead for another Severed thanator going to Eywa to her songcord.

- A blue, hollowed out twist-on style wire connector

Taken from the workshop Teylan set up on the Upper Plains. Le’sohek took out the metal bits on the inside while drilling it out. She’s very proud of Teylan venturing out of Resistance HQ, not to mention coming all the way to the Upper Plains. His behavior did make her a bit worried, but he seemed happy to be out for once.

A bit longer than most braiding sections. Le’sohek had to add on more Zeswa style cords as she was running out of space.

Glass taken from the screen Nesim shattered with her spear in Harding’s Lodge, with scraps of uniform taken from the RDA soldiers guarding the Lodge that Le’sohek had to kill. Continuing her symbolic ‘poaching’ of RDA material.

Cording Change: Another return to Kinglor Forest, as unlike the canon game, in this version things go a bit slower. This time Nefika gave Le’sohek leftover strips of dyed Kinglor silk fabric, which Le’sohek used to again tubular braid over the Zeswa core cords. They are vibrant and dark all at once, with Priya saying it looks a bit like ‘tie dye.’

Le’sohek returned to the Kinglor Forest in part to witness Nor and Ri’nela make their first bows all on their own without help from others, a big step in their path to being considered adults in Na’vi culture. Le’sohek collected small beads of the colors she associated with Nor (greens) and Ri’nela (pinks) and used them to frame beads she made from leftover scraps of the wood they used to make their bows. When Nor pointed out a songcord is supposed to only track events of the maker’s life, Le’sohek countered that besides her own bows, this was the first time she witnessed other Na’vi craft a single bow from start to finish as a rite of passage. And that she’ll do whatever she wants with her songcord. Nor relented. Le’sohek is very excited for them.

- A small cube made of carefully folded chocolate wrapper, filled with sap that hardened to turn it into a bead

Louis, the not-pilot Le’sohek helped rescue, gave Le’sohek some of the stolen chocolate as thanks for helping him figure out what the RDA was stashing around the forest. He then folded the wrapper into what he said was called a ‘chinese water bomb’ and puffed air into it, creating the cube. He further explained that his kid sister would always have him make them for her to play with since they didn’t have much growing up. He also confessed to being able to make flowers and ‘other girly stuff’ but thought Le’sohek would like to keep something to remember her first ever experience with the miracle of chocolate a bit more than some ‘frilly thing.’

- A long, five sided wooden tube bead with shimmering strands of woven Tarsyu plant fibers wrapped around it. A name is burned into each side of the bead: Yefti, Telisi, Okni, Ävauk, Luey

Buckle in for a long explanation. Le’sohek and Sìlron went to the ruins of the TAP facility she, Nor, Ri’nela and Teylan escaped from, with Le’sohek wanting to see if any of the other Sarentu had survived in cryo in other rooms. She went alone without telling anyone, knowing someone would try to stop her. Instead of anyone alive, she found Yefti, Telisi, Okni, Ävauk and Luey all in their still active cryopods, having died at some point between being frozen and Alma and the Resistance realizing they were there still. The room they were in was not blocked by rubble, and Le’sohek realized Alma, at the very least, had to have checked this room and left the bodies behind. Despite knowing that they couldn’t have escaped if they brought them, it shatters Le’sohek, and she calls HQ asking Ri’nela if she knows Sarentu burial practices yet, what should she do for the dead, and then devolves into crying and yelling at Alma that she left them behind. Ri’nela and So’lek race to TAP on So’lek’s ikran along with some Aranahe hunters only to find the cryo room empty and Le’sohek has stopped answering all comms. So’lek and Ri’nela eventually find Le’sohek in Harding’s office, the place trashed by the initial bombing but the desk and some shelves sitll standing. Le’sohek, siting with her back braced against the desk and hiding behind it, screams for So’lek to make Ri’nela leave, and when So’lek returns after having Ri’nela stand outside the room, he sits the with obviously distraught young Sarentu in the office. She begins babbling about how Aha’ri had a crooked fang, and she used to tease her about it even if it got her hair pulled and her sides tickled so much that she couldn’t breathe. It leads to her telling So’lek, in rambling, hiccuping gasps, the blow by blow of the night Aha’ri was killed, how Mercer shot her in the back of the head but there was no exit wound, her face was just frozen as if nothing had happened even though blood was pouring out the back of her head as Le’sohek and the others held her. Eventually Le’sohek uncurls enough to reveal she is holding the skull of an obviously young Na’vi...with a crooked fang and a ragged entry wound at the back. She says she found it on a shelf in Harding’s office. So’lek gets a sash from one of the Aranahe hunters and he and Le’sohek wrap Aha’ri’s skull so she can hold on to it while they return to HQ, bearing the bodies of the other Sarentu she found in cryo on the ikran of the hunters. Nor, Ri’nela, Le’sohek and Teylan bury the five that they grew up with at the Tarsyu closest to HQ.

- A river snail shell

Le’sohek is badly shaken by the realization that Alma did not tell them about the bodies of the others and the discovery of Aha’ri’s skull, kept like a trophy piece in Harding’s office. After several days of pinballing around in a mix of fugue dazed wandering, hiding from her Sarentu family, fighting with Nor, yelling at Teylan, withdrawing from Ri’nela, and taking out multiple RDA bases in pain driven coldness, Ri’nela goes to the Aranahe to ask for help, as none of them had ever actually processed grief before even after Aha’ri’s murder. Kayì, a lifelong healer and the death doula of the clan, provides Le’sohek direction by having her help Tsu’kiri come to terms with the death of their friend, Ey’teko, by finding the river shell the late hunter had told them about. The prank and laughter after loss, along with some words from Kayì, helps Le’sohek in her own grief and anger, and forges a conviction to find out what happened to the Sarentu and if Aha’ri’s (and Nor’s) nightmares hold truth as to how they were taken. She feels she can move forward again, but forward does not mean to forgot, nor forgive.

- A large, messy, complex knot of pink and burgundy Tarsyu fibers, tied to the songcord by a braided strand of cords in the Sarentu colors

Unlike the bodies of the five Sarentu, Le’sohek could not bring herself to fully bury Aha’ri’s skull and commit her to Eywa yet. She does not want to do so until they have the answers around what happened to their clan and where they would have stayed during times of celebration, as Le’sohek thinks it would be best to bury Aha’ri’s skull there on true Sarentu lands when they have figured out what Mercer did to their clan. The others, after some convincing, agree, and they temporarily bury Aha’ri’s skull, nestled in a carefully woven basket with trinkets and fabric and other things from them all, in a wooden box at the center of Hearthside, the tiny little cave camp the Sarentu have at Resistance HQ. Le’sohek made this knot of Tarsyu fibers to bind her promise to properly commit Aha’ri’s skull, and thus Aha’ri’s spirit, to Eywa once they find the truth of the Sarentu and their ancestral lands, or at least the last gathering spot the clan occupied. She redid it several times, never quite pleased with the look of it, but eventually realized it is the promise it symbolizes that truly matters.

Cording Change: Back to the Zeswa cords, signifying Le’sohek has returned to the Upper Plains and back to combating Harding’s black market. It is only after committing the stormglider known as Black Wind to Eywa that the plan to target the Zakru Graveyard is revealed.

- A stormglider tooth from Black Wind, bound with pink fibers to the songcord

Le’sohek added the pink strands to represent Ri’nela’s help in committing the trauma torn stormglider to Eywa for rest with her lost mate at last. Ri’nela’s Blaw Wind bow design is now one that Le’sohek uses for most battles, seeing it as a way to represent her tsahìk guiding her to harmony with Eywa despite the tasks at hand. She sees Ri’nela understanding the stormglider’s pain and helping to lead Black Wind to rest as one of the strongest steps Ri’nela has taken thus far as a tsakarem, and further solidified Le’sohek’s thought that Ri’nela is already their tsahìk, even if she doesn’t quite know it yet.

Given to Le’sohek by Sosul, as a thank you for tuning the wind flutes at the Zakru Graveyard and showing him he could return to the Zeswa while remaining a Burden Carrier.

Pasuk’s wool, taken again with permission, to honor the young zakru in death. Le’sohek made sure it was beautiful for him, as he always loved being painted and made beautiful as he slept. She folded over the braid and tied it together to symbolize another promise, one to take down Harding’s black market and wipe it from Pandora.

“This bead from Minang celebrates the first victory shared by the Zeswa and the Resistance. The flame will never go out.” aka a bead from Minang celebrating Le’sohek, the Zeswa and the Resistance taking down Harding’s black market and Harding’s main base on Pandora, driving her off the Upper Plains and back to Mercer.

Two seed beads, one for bonding to a stormglider (this was in fact for bonding to Black Wind, to give her peace and a promise during her passing that she avenged her fallen mate in the Kinglor Forest and that the RDA would be driven out) and one for bonding to a coronis. Despite their small size, Le’sohek found coronis to be very skittish and easy to startle. It took her entire time on the Upper Plains to gain the trust of just one of the flighted creatures and make tsaheylu with it.

- A flat, circular glass bead with a bright patterned flower design across both sides of the face and tiny hands clasped in a circle at the very middle of the flower, with a string of glass and ceramic seed beads encircling one half of the edge of the main bead

Priya gave this to Le’sohek when Le’sohek arrived at the Resistance HQ party in the mission ‘A Victory Celebration.’ Le’sohek, always happy to get a bead from Priya, took it as the excitable woman explained it was a ‘party favor,’ usually given out to people who went to parties on Earth to remember the celebration in the future, but Priya made this one, and the others she gave to Ri’nela, Teylan and Nor, for each of them individually as thanks and acknowledgement of the strides everyone has seen each of the Sarentu kids make over time, and how happy they all are for them making their own path.
