MORE AND MORE GAY COUPLES ARE ADOPTING KIDS.
Abandoned by straight couples.
Marriage Equality.
Such a wonderful evening at the marriage equality conference.
Listening to a sacked Northland teacher speaking out against homophobia, his sacking and the courage of the students to support him.
Listening to Green Politician Jan Logie, talk about lesbian visibility and creating safe spaces in our country for everyone, not just gay and lesbian.
Listening to the arguments against using heteronormative language so much in our schools and pop culture, hearing that the New Zealand passport office has FINALLY allowed kiwi's to change their gender as per their passport.
The fact the evenings events were held in the St Andrews Church on the Terrace - a church "declared to be an inclusive church on 8th, December 1991. Including all people of every creed, race, class and sexual orientation".
A church who, when passed, will marry LGBTQ couples in their church.
The evening made me feel so many things. there was sadness, that this was such a minority and that events like this needed to happen for what should just be fundamental human rights.
It bought me joy though, that this was happening all the same. that this small group, running of donations alone, held this conference to try and make a difference, to educate, highlight and help fight the assumptions.
I actually had a moment bring tears to my eyes, when Nigel Studdard had finished his empowering piece, and walked back to his chair. the whole audience raised to their feet and clapped so loudly, cheering this man. This christian man, married with 2 kids, just like the majority -standing up for us. Uniting with us, fighting the system, fighting homophobia, fighting for human rights.
"Never assume".
Also - loved the fact that there was a discussion about the nz ads - mantrol and man enough to stop domestic violence. after my ranty rant post a couple of days ago, it was nice to feel on the same page as these inspiring people, that i wasnt mad or alone in realising the ridiculousness of these campaigns.

Dreams
And I dream, I dream I dream of a time not so far from now He laughs, a face of warmth laughs as his soft lips peck my cheek The sun shines on my face, I smile back at him. The birds chirp, the cicadas sing We laugh on our porch, we have each other and are at peace. My son, Aaron, boisterous Aaron, kicks a ball around our back yard, trailed by his younger sister. Baby Emma, she's a strong young lass. My husband holds my hand, rubs my thumb, nurtures our love. I feel his wedding ring, I feel our rings and they are equal I am equal, we are equal. All is well. But the birds stop chirping, the cicadas stop singing A scream! A child's scream! Terror, horror! Aaron stops his football and turns to watch I run to my daughters side, she has scraped her knee, punching above her weight. "It's ok darling" I kiss her knee better, my husband brings a bandage and we fix up Emma's leg. "Thanks Daddy," she goes on trailing Aaron, she's a strong wee girl. Brave. Like her fathers. We are equal, all is fine, even though we, her parents, are both men. The birds chirp, the cicadas sing, the sun shines. The world did not end, the institution was not destroyed, the only change was we were allowed to live as equals. We are happy, our children are happy. They are loved, they are accepted. All is well. Love is what it is about no? And the love my children have is plentiful. So please let me live my dream. Marriage and adoption equality, New Zealand, 2012.
