Lenny is shot in the leg vs the stomach, he is able to escape and make his way back to camp, his leg is badly injured and already showing signs of infection. People don’t know what to do since no doctor, they can’t go to the one in Saint Denis for obvious reasons nor the one in Rhodes. Strauss and Pearson do cut off his leg, Grimshaw and Sadie holding him down plus they got a lot of alcohol and cocaine in his system to do this. Mary-Beth and Tilly care for Lenny as Sadie tries to figure out what is next. Lenny talks about how he saw his life flash in front of his eyes, he saw his father and Jenny. He wants to leave this life behind and become a different person. This gives Tilly an idea.
After things has calm down a bit and Lenny mostly recovered and before the other men returned, Tilly enacts her plan for Lenny. She gives him a fair amount of money she took from the donation box and some forged paperwork made by Mary-Beth that was almost complete. She told him this is his chance to leave and become a different person. Lenny chooses his new identity, Stuart Kirk, Stuart after his father and Kirk after Jenny. The story was that he was injured in a factory accident and that’s how he lost his leg and that his past wasn’t good and he didn’t want to talk about it.
Tilly and Lenny leave at night and make their way on Maggie all the way to Flatneck station. Sadie suggested it was better for Lenny to leave from station not in Lemoyne. At the station Tilly buys Lenny a ticket for “As far north as the line goes”. Tilly and Lenny bid farewell and Tilly tells Lenny for the short time they were riding together he was like a brother to her, and she promises to take care of Maggie for him. As he boards the train he is no longer Leonard Summers, he’s now Stuart Kirk
Fast forward about 5 years and Stuart Kirk (Lenny) is back in Saint Denis this time as a young lawyer working under a Haitian lawyer named Mr. Pierre. Mr. Pierre takes liking to Stuart and mentors him.
A year after Mr. Pierre invites Stuart to his engagement party, talking lovely about his bride to be, Tilly. Stuart accepts the invitation and wonders if it was the same Tilly who helped him start a new life. He felt so uncomfortable at the engagement party, this was the first time he wore a suit in Saint Denis since the robbery, also saw bankers and wondered if any of them recognized him. His suspicions about Mr. Pierre’s bride to be was right. Both him and Tilly tried their best to act natural and Tilly tried her best to not use his old name. They remained professional.
Stuart was also invited to the wedding, there he met a young woman, named Jeanne Pierre (Mr. Pierre’s kid sister) Stuart and Jeanne hit it off and soon they were quoting. He felt like he was living a lie which he was, but knew there was no turning back
Eventually Tilly accidentally reveals Stuart’s secret to Mr. Pierre by calling him Lenny, she breaks down crying begging for him to not fire Lenny/Stuart. Mr. Pierre does confront Stuart about this telling him that his secret is safe with him and Tilly but he should tell Jeanne before they get married. For the first time in nearly 7 years Stuart was able to not hid his past or who he was.
By the time of the epilogue Stuart and Jeanne are married, the news is announced in the paper. Only 3 maybe 4 people know his second, Tilly, Mr. Pierre, Jeanne and maybe Mary-Beth. The other members of the gang knew he had a new identity but didn’t know what his name was. Tilly is the only person he could talk to about this, about how his who life is a lie and he was a no good con man. Tilly tells him that it’s not true and he worked so hard to get where he is now.
John possibly could run into Stuart, but he looks so much different than Lenny. He is now 27, grew out his facial hair, wears his hair in a different style. When wearing his prosthetic Stuart walks with a cane and a limp and uses a crutch when not wearing his prosthetic. He also now has glasses. But John is still able to see bits of Lenny, and has to take a double look. Stuart recognizes John and says “Same face and new name, name’s Stuart Kirk.” John replies “Same face and name.”
Like Tilly, Stuart writes to John. Signing his letter the first time as Stuart Kirk (Lenny) this was the first time Stuart wrote down his old name. In his letter to John, Stuart talks a lot about Jeanne and mentions that they just found out she’s expecting. He talks about how thrilled they are especially since the baby would be less than a year younger than their cousin (Tilly’s child). He talks about how he doesn’t deserve Jeanne and how she’s far to understanding, how he’s a fraud. He also told John to not tell anyone else about his identity. Abigail and Sadie assumed that letters from Stuart Kirk were from Lenny but didn’t say anything.
Chapter 3; Uncle talks to some of the men in the camp. Uncle, Sean, Lenny, Hosea, Pearson and Arthur sit around the campfire, Javier is getting ready for rest.
