Trick or Treat, It's Halloween by Linda Lowery and Richard Keep
It's October and many families are looking forward to celebrating Halloween. This fun ABC book takes the alphabet down a spooky path filled with ghosts, goblins, and ghouls!
Before you read the book, talk with your child about what background knowledge they have about Halloween. Ask them how many monsters or creatures they can name and then keep an eye out for any that make an appearance in the story!
Trick or Treat, It's Halloween is filled with rhyming text that lends itself to a cadence perfect for focusing on phonological awareness.
This book also includes some fun new vocabulary, including words like “ravine”, “wail”, and “crimson”. Talk with your child and see if they can guess the meaning of any new words from clues in the pictures or text.
The illustrations in this book are created using a collage technique where pieces of paper are cut and glued together to form a picture. Let's practice our writing by focusing on the fine motor skills of cutting and gluing to make our own Jack O' Lantern collage!
Paper- black and any color for background
Collect any magazines you have around the house that are done being read (junk mail or the Sunday paper works, too!) Go through them and look for any pieces colored orange. Talk to your child about the different shades of orange you see.
Once you've found all your oranges, draw and cut out a pumpkin shape on your background paper.
Start gluing all your orange pieces onto your pumpkin; don't worry if they don't fit perfectly; we'll trim it up later.
When your whole shape is covered in orange use your scissors to trim the edges and reshape your pumpkin.
Use the black paper to cut out eyes, nose, and a mouth for your pumpkin.
Display your collage Jack O' Lantern for all the trick-or-treaters to see!
