Summary:

Harry, Draco, and Hermione go to a pub. Harry, Draco, and Pansy go to a pub. Harry, Draco, Pansy, and Hermione go to a pub. Harry, Draco, Hermione and Ron go to a pub. Harry, Draco, Hermione, Ron, and Pansy―you guessed it―go to a pub. I could go on. In fact, I did. Harry, Draco, Hermione, Pansy, Ron, Blaise, Luna, Goyle, Neville, and Theodore Nott go to a pub. In various combinations.

I suspect that I will not be the only one singing high praises to this fic today because let’s be honest – how many G rated fics out there have we read?? And we should! Have a whole fest for all those to unveil all the gems hidden underneath some excellent PWP :D

So for this one here – if ANY of you have SOMEHOW not read works by the one and only leterred, you do yourself a favour and do it like, right now. Now, onto the pub story! First off, I love the concept of it. Of actually giving each of the characters, one by one, their own moment. Whey're all so well-written here, I felt like I was reading about real people not just archetypes. For example, Neville got to actually be properly mad in this one! Which I always highly appreciate because the boy just deserves it. And Blaise? Oh my, Mr Zabini is to die for in this fic. His flirt abilities are through the roof, I was blushing through the screen. I mean, even Harry got a bit enamoured:

Harry explained to Hermione, “Blaise photosynthesises for a living.” “Er.” Hermione looked a little uncomfortable. She always looked that way when she corrected people's factual errors, but it actually hadn't convinced her to stop doing it. “Photosynthesis is what plants do.” “Yeah,” said Harry. “Blaise does what plants do. He lies around in the sun all day.”

And isnt that something we’d like to do for a living on this cold December day?

Also I am crazy for Protective Draco ™ and oh boy, does he deliver here. I will also never get tired of Hermione and Draco talking Deep Complicated Shit while Ron and Harry are like... so yeah, Quidditch is great, right xd ALSO, I may have a lil thing about Pansy & Ron as well as Pansy & Draco and both of these are A++ here.

And the discussions here just run! They don’t even flow, they run, and are so witty but somehow deep enough to get sad? How? HOW? The main story and relationships between the character are so well-paced, there's a lot going on but like, subtely, in hints and hidden in the background. It was such an experience to slowly unveil them!

All in all, 10/10 would recommend and see you tomorrow! (hopefully)

I practise ennui.” Harry frowned. “It’s not hard.” Zabini laughed again. “I don’t suppose it is, but I would venture to say that you haven’t mastered it.” “Blaise is arrogant,” Pansy said. “And he’s an arse. I like him very much.”

“Okay.” Harry glanced at Pansy and Blaise, who were nattering on about ballrooms and the length of skirts. He turned back to Teddy. “Here’s an abstract for you, since you’re smart. Do you believe in conscience?” Teddy quirked his brow again. “Do you mean, an innate understanding of and urge toward right versus wrong?” Harry shoved his hands in his pockets. “Yeah.” Teddy blinked. “No.” “Then why do people think they have one?” His brow furrowing as he considered his reply, Teddy said at last, “Society breaks down if everyone thieves, murders, rapes, and pillages, and society benefits most individuals.” He shrugged. “People have developed conscience to benefit themselves.” Harry glanced at Pansy and Blaise again. When he caught Pansy’s eye, she blushed. In her slow and slothful way, she turned back to Blaise, but the colour stayed on her cheeks. Harry turned back to Teddy. “Then people do have it.” “Many people do. Some learn it. Some never do. It’s just like social cues, or a will to live. These things aren’t moral imperatives. They’re not even magic. They’re survival instincts.” “Where does magic fit in?” “Magic is a survival instinct too.” Teddy shrugged again. “People developed a sense of sight to better interact with their world. Lesser creatures don’t have eyes. People also developed a sense of magic.”

“Neville, it’s not like you’re holding a grudge,” Harry said. “It’s not like you’re a bad person just because you can’t forget that . . .” Harry knew he had to say it; he had to say it, or he’d be lying to himself, and Neville, and even to everyone―to Malfoy―and that wasn’t fair. “Because you can’t forget that someone tortured you, or tortured someone you love. If you were Bellatrix, right now―I couldn’t forgive you.” “It’s not forgiveness.” Neville ran a hand through his hair. “It’s just the forgetting part that’s hard.” Harry looked at him a while, Neville’s strong, kind face; his large, capable hands. “Malfoy says, don’t forget. He says we shouldn’t forget, so that it can’t happen again, and that’s how we make the world a better place.” Neville looked startled, then smiled a little, wryly. “Harry,” he said. “Do you even realize how many times Malfoy has said to me, ‘Potter says’?”

so this fic awakened something in me, hoo boy. I read so much fic in January and let me tell you, 95% of it was Star Trek. I'm feeling some type of way and that way is: very emotional. I did not realise I needed a character study of Spock's emotions and relationship with sexuality but I got it and I am very very grateful. when I got the notification that lettered had posted this one, I was like "oh I guess I'll try this" and then I sat there for 2 hours while I read the whole thing in one sitting. it was posted in June last year, and I have reread it 5 times since then. when I say that this fic is something special to me, it truly is. if you have any inkling whatsoever towards reading it, please do. as for the design, I wanted to keep it clean and classy, and I pulled elements from the fic to give it those design elements, like the colours of the discs used on the front, and the sequence of the colours for the endbands. Touch is a huge theme of the fic, and having the hand on the front was informed by the conversations I had with @a-gay-old-time about her lovely lovely hand designs on a lot of her fanbinds. ALL IN ALL: what a good fic, by a fantastic author.

ok I saw your tags on the Ciaran Hinds Rochester. He was my first Rochester, which is how I got into Jane Eyre and then classic lit in general, so he has such sentimental value to me. I also just love Hinds. He's the best Captain Wentworth, obviously. But his Rochester is so shouty!!! Do you have thoughts on Toby Stephens? What about all the Janes? Can I get rankings? With pictures? Or just your thoughts. This is the first ask I have ever submitted to anyone.

First of all, I saw this last night/early morning when I was trying to sleep and I rolled my eyes to the ceiling and went OH MY GOD. Like, I started PLANNING.

Second, of all, I am honored to receive your first ask. *bows deeply with a frilly handkerchief*

I used to read Jane Eyre once a year but haven’t in at least seven so my memory is hazy as fuck so I’m probably gonna throw in some pirates and space ships to the narrative that weren’t there before. Thank you, memory! 

My reasons for loving certain Janes and Rochesters are very fucking shallow and personal, okay? It’s totally LOOKS BASED. When I see super hottie Janes and super hottie Rochesters with perfect symmetrical faces, I’m like PUHLEEEZE. I want Janes and Rochesters that are hot like secrets; jolie laide all the way. Only they see one another’s beauty because that, to me, was always at the heart of this thing–that intense feeling of being truly seen and admired by the beloved while everyone else moves around you, going about their day.

But of course it’s more than being truly seen and admired for one’s gifts–it’s the MORE entirely. Having the person who is in love with you see you as MORE than you truly are, then be brutally faced with the extremely ugly reality of you, and still love you?

So consequently I get rid of all the hottie Rochesters like Stephens and Magneto and James Bond. Which leaves us with William Hurt, Orson Welles and Hinds.

I like Hurt but found him to be too much in his head and lacking in delight. Like, I want Rochester to be like WTF, JANE but also, wtf, Jane, I’ve been in an anxiety brood-coma for twenty years and I found my mouth twitching the other day and is that smiling? I’m going to do some weird shit now that’s flirting but also, please ignore the woman in the attic. Hurt didn’t look like the sort of man who would be stupid enough to keep a madwoman in the attic. So X to you, Academy Award winner William Hurt. You looked too much like a constipated accountant.

Orson Welles–and I saw this version when I was a child so this a child’s hot take–has a very large head and made me laugh, because he is funny and smart, but he was also not into the actress playing Jane, not even a little bit. In other words: nope, bye.

HINDS. Yes, you’re right. He is the best Wentworth, now and forever, like Cats. But I do love his Rochester because he’s super fucking weird and shouty and like, clearly not that Great with People but everyone sort of puts up with him because he’s somewhat respectable. Once he starts feeling Jane, he’s desperate and sweaty in a perfectly uptight way. Everything is liKE tHiS; he can’t calibrate shit. He swipes the hair out of his eyes, he poses weirdly. When he smiles, it’s a little scary. He makes really bad moves–which! are! the canon! moves!–but it all tracks with this interpretation. He is good looking sometimes but not really all the time, distractable but also keenly focused on the wrong thing. This is absolutely the sort of idiot who would keep a madwoman in the attic and be like, that is a good long term plan. He looks like he talks to himself because there’s no one else really. Until Jane. Who doesn’t react the way other people do to him.

Samantha Morton was his Jane and while I liked her a lot; she has a lovely, grave, feral quality–you believe her rage, she’s still very actress beautiful though. And that’s the thing, nearly all of the Janes are porcelain doll pretty. So whenever that rando lady who Rochester pretends to be into for a minute shows up, there’s never any real fear–they are always just as gorgeous. They’re wearing less make-up and their gown is drab, that’s the only difference. I personally, love the contrast of seeing this person who is supposed to be a perfect catch for Rochester, all beauty and polish, standing next to Jane. I think it is an important moment for Jane, how she views herself, and for Rochester, how he sees her. In my mind, she is quite different in both.

I think looks-wise, I’m partial to Charlotte Gainsbourg and her determined underbite but she lacks the steeliness that I need in my Jane. If I could Frankenstein her up a bit, I’d give her some of Samantha Morton’s rage and practicality, with a pinch of Ruth Wilson‘s witchy haunted vibe. I don’t think I’ve found my Jane yet. But you know those adaptations will keep coming. I know I have a wishlist Mr. Rochester but need to keep an eye out for a good Jane.
