Eight Postcards from Utopia

1990年代から00年代にかけてのルーマニアのTVCMを8つのテーマに分けてザッピングするアーカイヴ映画。冷戦後の90年代に洪水のように投資についてのCMが作成されていたことに震撼する。その後「旧西側」の映像言語に染まっていく様もよくわかる。

『I am not a Witch』のルンガノ・ニョニの新作。車で帰宅途中、シュラは叔父が道路の真ん中で死んでいるのを発見する。そこから葬儀に至るまでに、彼女といとこたちが叔父から受けた虐待について、そしてk彼の（シュラたちよりも階級の低い）妻の家族に対する仕打ちについて明らかにされていく。葬儀という、どこでも因習が深く根を張る儀式を通して親族間の性虐待と階級の残酷さをドライなユーモアとシャープな映像で描く。最終的に階級の話に持っていくあたりはやはりUK (ウェールズ）の作家だなあという印象を持った。

Soundtrack to a Coup d'Etat

ベルギーのJohan Grimonprezによるドキュメンタリー。1961年、ベルギー領コンゴでパトリス・ルムンバが首相となったことから国連において米ソ、そして「第三勢力」としてのアジア・アフリカの旧植民地国間の対立が激しくなる。同時にUSはルイ・アームストロングをアフリカに、ディジー・ガレスピーをワルシャワ条約機構下にある国に「ジャズ大使」として派遣し、ソフトパワーによる影響強化を図る。同時にUSではマルコムXらをリーダーとする公民権運動が本格化していた。1960年代のアフリカ独立ラッシュ、USにもソ連にもつかないオルターナティブを求めた国々と、現在まで続くコンゴの天然資源搾取と虐殺について、ブルーノートレーベルのジャケットデザインを思わせるなグラフィックデザインとシャープな編集、モダン・ジャズの名曲で語る意欲作。

The Invasion

セルゲイ・ロズニツァの新作はロシアによる侵略下にあるウクライナの銃後の市民を、5～10分程度の短編のアンソロジーとして編んだドキュメンタリー。もともとはフランスのTV局、アルテからの短編映画の委嘱が最終的に一編の長編映画になったもの。戦死者の葬儀から結婚式、学校、病院、軍事訓練、地雷撤去、ロシア語書籍の廃棄（個人的にはこのシークエンスが大変すごいと感じた）といった「戦時の生活」がただひたすら映される。男性が概ね軍服姿で折に触れて空襲警報が聞こえてくる、そんな中でも聞こえてくるユーモラスなやりとりと屈しないレジリエンスを、ただひたすら淡々と写し続ける。

ラトビアのアニメ作家ギンツ・ジルバロディスの新作。洪水の中、一匹の黒猫が犬（レトリーバー）、カピバラ、ツル（？）、ワオキツネザルと共に船に乗り、人間の住んでいた痕跡のある場所を冒険する。クレジットからしてオープンソースのグラフィックソフトblenderを使用して作成されたようで、動物の毛並みや羽毛の繊細な表現はないのだが（IMAXではやや逆効果だったかもしれない）、嵐や地殻変動のダイナミックな表現は大変な迫力。正直複数の動物のシークエンスは人間キャラクターでやることをかわいい動物で行っている感が否めないが、ネコの生態をよく写した描写はとてもかわいい。

ドミニカのネルソン・カルロ・デ・ロス・サントス・アリアスの作品。コロンビアの「麻薬王」と呼ばれたパブロ・エスコバールに飼われていたカバの一匹、ぺぺの目から見た世界とかれの運命をめぐる顛末。ナミビアから連れてこられたぺぺはアフリカーンス、ムブクシュ、スペイン語の3言語で独白する。前半はアフリカからコロンビアに連れてこられたぺぺの観察、後半は近所の川へと逃げたのちに起こる沿岸の村での騒動からその最期までを人間目線で描く。正直後半が退屈で、全編ぺぺ目線で通して欲しかった。

山田と吉田という『けいおん！」コンビによる長編アニメ。人物や音に色を見る共感覚者のトツ子は、同学年のきみに美しい青色を感じていたが、彼女が高校を退学したことで彼女の意外な一面を知ることとなる。美麗な画像と色彩で魅了するアニメ。キャラクターの感情はあくまで微温で示され、各々の事情にも深くは言及されず、行動も一定の善意と距離を持って常にとられている。実際の共感覚者のありかたを示すというよりは、ストーリーの起動装置という扱いである。キャラクターの繊細な演技（作画と声優）が美しい。

2021年、COVIDパンデミックによるロックダウンで俳優のサム・クレーンとマーク・オスターヴィーンは本職が干上がり日々Grand Theft Auto Onlineで時間を潰していた。ふとそんな時にゲーム中で誰もいないアリーナを見つけ、そこでハムレットを上演するアイデアを思いつく。サムとマーク、サムの配偶者で映像作家のピニーは出演者を募り、世界中から様々なプレイヤーがやってくるが、そもそも暴力に最適化されたゲーム世界、ロックダウンが終了しオフラインに戻っていく参加者たちといった困難のなかでそう簡単にことが進むわけはない。これはそのストリーミング上演までの道をゲーム上のやりとりのみで構成したドキュメンタリー。奇天烈なアイデアがロックダウン中の困難な状況下に演劇を行うことの意義を問うことまでに到達していく様子をゲーム上の無意味な殺し合いを交えながら描く、他ではちょっと見ないタイプの作品。

BLITZ by Steve McQueen will open the 68th BFI London Film Festival

Steve McQueen's World War II drama Blitz is premiering at the 68th BFI London Film Festival. McQueen, who directed, produced, and wrote the film, is returning to the festival after winning Academy Awards and BAFTAs. Blitz tells the story of George, a nine-year-old boy living in wartime London. When his mother, Rita, sends him to the countryside for safety, the film follows George's journey back to London and Rita's search for her missing son.

This is McQueen's third time opening the LFF, following Widows in 2018 and Mangrove in 2020. In 2016, he received the BFI Fellowship at the festival. Blitz will be released in select cinemas on November 1 and will later be available for streaming on Apple TV+ starting from November 22. The 68th BFI London Film Festival will take place from October 9 to 20. Screenings will be held at various London venues, including the Southbank Centre's Royal Festival Hall, BFI Southbank, and BFI IMAX. The festival will also feature screenings at partner cinemas across the U.K.

The all year London Film Festival

Although I am only about little more than half way my silly attempt to watch all the films shown in the 2021 London Film Festival I have learned some valuable lessons.

The first lesson is that planning is key, so I am starting to think about the 2022 London Film Festival and how to maximise the amount of films I will watch, hoping I get closer to the ideal that right now for 2021 seems utterly quixotic (I can't find information about some films at all for example, some others are highly unlikely to be released in the UK or -mad laughter- Spain anymore, although there are films still coming up to July 2022, a good 10 months after the festival, and occasionally one pops out of nowhere in streaming).

So I will redirect you from here to the page that tries to organise each festival and from there you should find my non professional spoilertastic reviews.

There are other challenges, but I will write about those as they become relevant, I may not even be in London during most of the 2022 festival, which would be really bad, but hey ho, I have an aim, where there is a will there is a silly man trying to find a way.
