So I went to Kevin Cummins’ talk last night and I asked him from his perspective as a photographer how would he say the chemistry/dynamics between the brothers have changed throughout the years (since he worked with oasis and both Liam and Noel’s solo careers on and off for a long period) - or has it really changed at all. Turns out he’s not the best person to ask about this lol.
He asked me if I have a sibling I said yes. He asked if I like them I said yes and he seemed much surprised and went on to say that he doesn’t like his brother that much etc etc and suggested them two to share a similar relationship in his understanding. He then told this story of him taking pics of Liam for an Adidas thing before his gig about 3 years ago and Liam was like ‘ha I bet you’re more excited to shoot me than rkid aren’t ya.’ Then he talked about all the grabbing and stuff in the live 25 vids and admitted he saw the growing bonding they’ve shown this year as the tour proceeded. But he also guessed they don’t see each other after each gig until the moment before the next one (which is what lots of bands do). And that’s what people do - maintaining a good relationship by keeping some distance from each other. I kinda see that.
I was actually expecting him to say sth about the change in their dynamics from 1994 (the year he first met them) and later on but tbh his answer was not that interesting to me lol. He seems to be that kind of photographer who is all about creating an image for the bands and couldn’t care less about capturing or documenting all the subtle details or moments, which is fair enough because that’s the reason why he was able to give us all these iconic pics that had such a huge influence on the audiences across the world.
He also mentioned a few other interesting interactions with them during that period in 1994 where he worked with them a lot and imo it seems like he’s slightly more interested in Liam lol.
Anyway my respect to him for all the fantastic shots he gave us. It’s really a privilege to have someone who worked with all these great bands and artists like joy division the stone roses happy mondays david bowie etc to help oasis build their early visual identity and mythology.
