It really bothers me that some intelligent reylos are super into the "Rey personally sacrifices Kylo Ren" idea because "mythology mythology something mythology." Like, I get SW is influenced by Campbell and mythology, but at the end of the day it's still its own entity with its own rules. Rey killing Kylo for whatever reason makes my skin crawl. I'm okay with KR sacrificing *himself* and then reviving, but I don't like the alternative. You don't have to answer this bc it's been talked to death.
Yeah, I think I’ve made clear why I genuinely despise it. Sure, maybe it’s a resonant and potentially powerful trope with history in storytelling, but that doesn’t make it appropriate for this story. It’s fundamentally at odds with the ethical idealism and thematic coherence of Star Wars. It would be Palpatine gaining the moral victory Luke denied him in RotJ. It undermines absolutely everything the saga has been saying and all of its uncompromising, unflinching lionising of choosing life/rescue/love/hope no matter how impractical, impossible, or dangerous that choice seems.
It’s a major concern of the films that murder ‘for love’ cannot be justified no matter how necessary or emotionally satisfying it seems. Love builds, it does not destroy, it doesn’t sacrifice others or surrender to violence. That’s in large part what this story has been about in the majority of the films. Even the subplots in TLJ were about this. Making Rey’s climatic saving action to murder the person she loves for the ‘greater good’ is the most ass-backward total negation of the Luke/Vader climax humanly possible. If that’s the case and she’s going to be rewarded for that, Luke should have killed Vader to get to Palpatine instead of throwing any chance of fighting away and he was correct in thinking he should murder sacrifice Ben to prevent the rise of a new dark Skywalker. End of.
