December 28, 1719 - Our Fraudulent Business Scheme was Actually a Social Experiment to Test Financial Literacy

Whereas Notice was lately given in this Paper, that Permits for a Subscription towards raising a Sum not exceeding a Million Sterling, for establishing an effectual Company of Insurers, &c. would be deliver’d at Baker’s Coffeehouse in Exchange Alley at 5s. each; and several Hundred of the said Permits having been accordingly deliver’d at the aforesaid Price, This is to give Notice to the Persons possess’d of any of them, that the Money will be return’d at the said Place to the Bearers thereof, (without any Deduction of Charges) on this Day and to Morrow, between the Hours of Three and Six in the Afternoon. The several Advertisements relating to this Affair, formal Delivery of the Permits, &c. having been solely intended from the Beginning, to convince the Publick, with what facility designing People, under Colour of an advantagious Undertaking, may at any Time impose upon a credulous Multitude. N.B. The Person’s employ’d to deliver the Permits, and receive the Money for the same, were unknown to any of the Purchasers, who contented themselves with a fictitious Name subscrib’d thereunto, compos’d only of the first Letters of the six Persons Names concern’d in this great Undertaking.
