Metaphor Re:Fantazio Euchronia vs SMT IV Mikado comparision - my autistic ramblings
Okay so idk if anyone will be interested in my (in form of mostly free thoughts) notes about that subject but the fact those two kingdoms are so similar to each other in some aspects give me the weirdest autistic brainrots actually. I finished Metaphor like a week ago yet I still need to talk about this and I have a need to compare both of those fictional atlus kingdoms as I see many similarities between them actually
Like i said its more in a form of notes/free thoughts than a serious meta so if I missed anything or I got something wrong i'm sorry lol, I hadn't read each and every supplementary material and gamedevs interview for M:RF or SMT IV, most are the informations you can find in games (in the plot or notes in games)
Of course heavy spoilers for Metaphor Refantazio and SMT IV under the cut:
Similarities for both kingdoms:
-BOTH ARE LITERALLY PLACED ABOVE POST-APOCALYPTIC TOKYO
Although with SMT IV we are sure Mikado is around the same size as Tokyo, in MR:F it seems like Euchronia itself might be not necesarily above Tokyo but perhaps above entire Japan since the journey from one place in the kingdom to another took days, meanwhile in Mikado you could travel from main capital to villages like Kiccigiorgi within a couple hours/the same day
What we know is the fact you could enter Tokyo (in fact Shinjuku) from ruins on Virga Island but we were never given an opportunity to leave the building and actually go into the ruined city (unfortunately)
The difference is of course the state of everything underneath it. While SMT IV Tokyo was post-apocalyptic but still there was people who were trying to live their lifes there, M:RF Tokyo is completely desolated for any form of life except "humans" (aka the refantazio monsters). There isn't any time anomaly between both places as well but that's understandable since there wasn't any Masakado to make a barrier and protect people of Tokyo in this story (where as we know, time anomaly in SMT IV was happening due to the barrier between both places)
Also I just found lost Shinjuku in Metaphor was a reference to Etrian Oddysey, I didnt know that lol I never played that game. Yet the fact there is Tokyo under the kingdom just like in SMT IV - still sus for me
-Both kingdoms are theocratic
We know in Mikado the religion is Catholicism/Christianity since it's the place that YHVH (Christian Father God and Jewish God as well) made, guarded by his angels and by his will
In Refantazio, the main religion of Euchronia is Sanctism that seems to share a lot of doctrine and imagery with Catholicism as well - mostly the fact they are worshipping one God who created everything, similar hierarchy with the presence of "pope" (Santifex Forden) and "bishops" (like that Joanna woman) also similar looking churches and some other imagery like religious robes. Honestly, Santctism feels like Catholicism but under different name and symbol (also fun fact: the Santicsm symbol is inverted triangle, meanwhile Father God in Christianity is often depicted with a triangle as well). We never got an answer to in Metaphor if the God Sanctists are worshipping is YHVH as well or not tho (unless Atlus will make some sequel to Metaphor one day lol)
Nevertheless, both kingdoms are strictly controller by Monastery/Church, where in both places the Church has the last saying in everything and is placed even higher than the king himself
The difference is that in Mikado everyone seem to worship the same faith, while in Euchronia there are pagans like Mustari tribe that believe in multiple gods and dragons existence (even if they are marginalized by Sanctists and people in kingdom in general, some other alternative religion exists)
-Inhabitants of both kingdoms are genetically modified in some way
We know that at the beginning of Mikado, the god kidnapped children from Tokyo (involving Akira's sister) and then genetically modified them with demonic gene to make them stronger than regular humans
And then Akira and his people came to Mikado and started breeding with original inhabitants which made the demonic gene started to dissapear over the generations so Mikadian people look no different from Tokyo people now. I wonder how they'd look like if Akira never came to Mikado tho...
Which leads us to Metaphor Refantazio, where after the apocalypse, humans seem to get genetically modifed with magla (which tbh sounded like the same substance as magatsuhi in smt nocturne and V for me btw) into the nine tribes we know from the game. Since we have tribes like Eugief or Nidia (in original forms) which looks completely different from humans it seems whenever modification there was, it was much stronger than the one from SMT IV. We have to remember though, that original Tokyo people aka Elda tribe were forced to live in isolation, besides couple exceptions like Will - our protagonist, there seem they didn't really bred with other tribes, so maybe it's not the fact the modification was stronger but perhaps it just never dissapeared like in Mikado case? Who knows
Differences between two kingdoms:
-All the stuff I mentioned above
While we know that the reason that Mikado was able to remain a peaceful kingdom without war was due to the fact they hadn't any neighbors, the situation is a bit different in Euchronia. Sure, now they are one kingdom but there were 3 separate kingdoms before the war. There is still a lot of tensions between the muncipalities (former separate kingdoms) that can be seen trorough the game. In Mikado there is no case of this as it has no neighbors whatsoever
And a lot of small differences like for example:
-different currency - in Mikado people use Macca which is demon's money and in Euchronia the currency is called Reeve
-different language - it seem that Euchronians forgot Japanese language, as in shop in Eht Ria we can find out some of the weapons got named in the "ancient language of Old World" and we can also find out from Eupha that the name Shinjuku is in "ancient language" as well. So it seems after the apocalypse, people of New World made their own language they use ever since. I personally wonder if Elda tribe as "keepers of Old World secrets" were still able to speak Japanese at least a little tho...Meanwhile in Mikado (probably due to Akira's influence) people still were speaking Japanese language and only write in english alphabet/romanization of japanese
-Euchronia's style in both buildings and clothing look more like if someone mixed 19th century with medievalism, there is a lot of steampunk vibes and there are also stuff that couldn't exist in medieval times like the lanterns in Grand Trad for example, while Mikado look proper medieval and more of 13th/14th century style
Anyways my conclusion is that both kingdoms are quite similar to each other, despite their differences. Euchronia seems more like how Mikado could have develop if Akira never showed up there (and SMT IV events like Masakado making a barrier hadn't happened as well). Is there some hidden connection between both places that we don't know of? Maybe, but I guess we'll never know it
Anyways congratulations if you safely got trough my autistic ramblings, here's a cookie for you 🍪🍪🍪
