I love hearing Connor speak French. It is impressive how many Quebeçois words he was able to deduce. I'd say he did quite well.

I learned French all through grade school. I also did 4 yrs in University. Learning Parisian French, like Connor did, I found though is quite different than learning Quebeçois or even Acadian which is found in New Brunswick. They are quite their own languages. I remember it was quite a shock when we did an Acadian night at Université de Moncton when I spent a summer there on a bursary.

for everyone that's ever been confused about this:

a LINGUIST is not, by definition, someone that knows a bunch of languages (though that is a common side effect)

a LINGUIST is not someone that silently corrects everyone's grammar. that's a prescriptivist.

a LINGUIST IS someone who practices the scientific study of language. someone who observes how people do language in real life and describes what's actually going on.

can any linguistics people explain to me why an infinative verb is different to a gerund? I am especially confused about this when it comes to languages with freer word order which inflect for case, since it seems like they often take the position of an object, but are not marked any differently than if they were a "subject".

My understanding of verbs and verb syntax is very rudimentary, so I'm sure I'm mixing up a lot of concepts here!
