Linn Underhill, Claiming the Gaze, 1991-1993

Claiming the Gaze was the first deliberate “gender piece” from the early ’90s. I tried to subvert the ways in which women are photographed in advertising and public media. The strategy I countered with was to photograph women straight on, full figure, life-sized, and unsmiling. These are not really portraits; they are about assuming the unfamiliar and unaccommodating pose of female command.

Fresh out of grad school, newly divorced and armed with theories about appropriation, I took on my mother’s archive of wedding photographs to comment on the imperfect institution of marriage.

The smiles are from the faces of brides and grooms, enlarged to 30″ square; the texts alternate between the lyrics of romantic love songs and lists of the banal parts of marriage that sometimes spoil the fun.

After All signals the moment when various parts of my body began to give me grief and my doctors produced amazing images from the interior. I modeled organs and joints in clay, cast them in a translucent resin, and arranged them to reflect my appreciation and/or annoyance of those essential and troublesome traveling companions.
