Thoughts on To Be Hero X Episode 18: Died-Out Flame
Another interesting episode.
The opening fight between Vortex and Big Johnny was giving me major earth bender/air bender vibes, and it was fun.
Been too long since we had a new 2D Avatar thing and the new show isn't coming along for a while, so this was nice. Vortex was fun in combat, too. I wonder what his super big ability was, and why he couldn't use it. Did Ah Sheng heal him and so he couldn't use it on someone Ah Sheng cared about? (Someone in the comments suggested it's because Big Johnny is an alien and thus immune, and while that's entirely possible, it's a very finicky deus ex machina immunity and inconsistent across use as far as I can see. There might be reasons why some of Vortex's powers work and others don't against Big Johnny, but eh. Ah Sheng sabotage is more interesting to me)
He looks good. Just saying. Misses his ex-boyfriend. Or should I say his X-boyfriend.
It must be so horrible to have powers related to controlling air and physical matter... and yet to die, seemingly powerless, trapped in a mechanical cage as it plummets to your death. I assume he was powerless at the time, or at least not strong enough to escape. Though since it was maybe an assassination, he could have been drugged or something. Perhaps he found out too much about why Sheng was killed and had to be silenced?
New cutie alert! His name appears to be Liu Ge...? Glad Little Johnny has a boyfriend, too. His father would be proud.
There's this really cute animation shot where Big Johnny crawls under Little Johnny's arms. It's such a cat thing.
I'm sure other people have pointed this out but this just looks like donghua Tilda Swinton.
Ghostblade is so tired of Rock/Zac's strange mating rituals.
(I will go down with this ship)
Meanwhile, with the other terrible husbands
Love them. "Uncle Mickey". Uh huh.
Meanwhile, Shang De is... figuring out gem fusion? Sure, why not. The whole thing with his eyes flicking back and forth is a really well animated but disturbing shot.
When your daughter catches you flirting with your husband.
Mickey showing he's a shit and Liu Zhen should get better taste by sending Queen into the fray.
Is the stuff with Little Johnny from Episode 16 better with what little added perspective they had from Little Johnny? No. It's still dumb (and worse because of the weird ways he tries to justify it). I assume he's going to see Ghostblade having killed DJ Shindig, connect the dots even more that Ghostblade killed Ah Sheng, and let loose.
They also released the lyrics for the Johnnies' song.
Overall an interesting episode. I can't say I care about the Johnnies (and are we ever going to see what's up with the giant animals in their intro movie?), but there was lots of neat stuff with the side characters.
Will we see everything come to a head at last in the final Johnnies episode next week?
Looks like basically everyone is showing up... Original Nice, Queen, Dragon Boy, the Johnnies, X, Ahu, Lucky Cyan, E-Soul... Looks like a fun episode. Maybe we finally get to see why Nice lost his shit in that one shot Li Haoling shared on twitter in April. It'd make sense if Spotlight is releasing fear and messing with people's emotions.
Also the animation in the preview looks so nice. Nice looks wonderful. It was his character movie that really got me into him, which was also in 2D, and this looks to be wonderful as well.
Liu Zhen, one of the Seven Masters of Jian'an was a close personal friend of Cao Pi. This poem was a response to one Cao Pi's, presented during a banquet.
Asuntos oficiales se solapan;
los borradores: un galimatías.
No hay tiempo de comer, rasgueo aprisa;
sin ver ningún alivio, el sol se pone.
Pierdo pie entre los pliegos y registros;
aturdido, la mente se me ofusca.
Ya libre corro al arrabal oeste;
subo a un alcor y oteo largo en torno.
Cuadrado tanque embalsa el agua clara,
en medio flotan ánsares y patos.
¿Quién me dará unas alas fragorosas
con que vaya a boyar entre vosotros?
