Studio Pottery! What is Studio Pottery? ~Studio Pottery is made & sold by a local artisan. It is a more individualized art piece and made from wet clay. What is the difference between studio pottery and commercial pottery? ~Commercial pottery is mass produced, it involves pressure and heat of dried powered clay which is pressed in a plate or mold. How is studio pottery made? Clay is formed on a pottery wheel or by ahand building techniques, then fired once or twice and then glazed prior to the final firing. What is glazing? ~Painting or dipping a piece in liquid glaze (paint) to them fired again. All glazes contains silica which is a component of glass which seals the piece. Is Studio Pottery collectible? ~Yes! - highly collectible! For serious collectors, some might collect a particular artist or style or even build a collection based on functionality- ie, dinnerware. How would one recognize a piece of studio Pottery? ~Generally found on studio pieces, are the artist’s makers mark or an actually artist’s signature. There might even be an artist’s “chop” on the piece. What is a “chop”? It’s dried clay that leaves an impressioon, i.e., a maker’s mark symbol. When was the “hey day” of the pottery production period? ~The 1950’s - 1960’s ~which is still collectible - for example, in Peter Voulkos abstract expressionist studio pieces. How do you clean studio pottery? ~With warm soapy water. then rinsed and towel dry. *Please note!
