MAGNIFICENT BLACKBIRD - The two-manned Lockheed SR-71A (61-7976) on display in the National Museum of the United States Air Force at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, Ohio. The SR-71A "Blackbird" (also called "Habu") was a long-range, high-altitude, high-speed secret spy plane. Developed by Clarence "Kelly" Johnson's Lockheed "Skunk Works" black projects program in the 1960s, the SR-71A was utilized by the U.S. Air Force for reconnaissance and later by NASA for scientific research. Thirty-two SR-71A craft were developed and operated into the late 90s, many of them being lost. The SR-71A Blackbird flew numerous combat spy missions over Vietnam in the 1970s. Capable of flight in excess of Mach 3, it still holds many manned-aircraft speed records as well as many aircraft altitude records above 85,000 feet.
