This joyful artists’ book by Lois Morrison gives vignettes of the narrator dancing through life—it just so happens to be a caterpillar. The caterpillar who is a corps de ballet is petite, measuring at 5 x 14 cm when all ten legs are in first position. The story is told on the body of a caterpillar with text printed with a Gocco printer and illustrations in ink and watercolor. Created in an edition of 25 around 1993/1994, our library copy is #24 and signed by the artist. While we may not be able to see this caterpillar grace the stage, Pointe Magazine continues to create a list of ballets from companies around the world streaming free online.

Deep in the Yellow Wood by Lois Morrison is a movable artists’ book inspired by Artist Book Ideation Cards. The color yellow was chosen by the artist from the prompt of ‘favorite color’ and features characters from other elements of her work, including the ‘yellow kid’, a goat inspired by one of her favorite comics as a child. In this movable star carousel book, the goat dances with other creatures to the music of Pan’s pipes through yellow woods. Printed with a Gocco printer on yellow papers and sponge painted arches, hand done elements enhance the book to come alive. 

The yellow brings to mind favorite yellow things: daffodils, honeycomb, goldfinches, and changing fall leaves--it feels like a golden time of the year.

My eyes were immediately drawn to the structure and vibrant colors of this artist’s book by Lois Morrison titled, Deep in the Yellow Woods.  The star carousel book features French Lemon Drop, Banana Split, and Shocking Yellow paper with Gocco printed animals. An amazing work that I hope brightens your day!

"The idea for this book came from a presentation by the artist, in which she discussed her creative process. Morrison recommends using the Artist Book Ideation Cards developed by Julie Chen and Barbara Tetenbaum. As an example, using the cards, Morrison's color card directed her to use her 'favorite color.' Yellow became the defining theme for the resulting book. Most characters in Deep in the Yellow Woods are from other Morrison works, but she did introduce a new character - the yellow dog. The yellow goat, featured in previous works and one of her favorite characters, was inspired by an old comic strip, 'The yellow kid.' Through the years the yellow goat has had many adventures, and in this book, he is dancing to the music of Pan's pipes in the yellow woods - along with elephants, Eve's snake, the great rabbit in the sky, and the yellow, striped dog"--Vamp & Tramp website (viewed September 23, 2015).

Lois Morrison and Julie Chen Ste. Ostrich in Manhattan: Visitations of a Martyr Berkeley: Flying Fish Press 1990 Ste. Ostrich in Manhattan whimsically portrays the character of Ste. Ostrich, a fictional female ostrich on a mission to make others happy. Though the life of Ste.
