as far as i understand; Jazz maneuvered through waves of congregations before it was named and sold.
Jazz was also exported internationally (with an intense focus on Africa) beginning in the 60s. The State department was the vehicle in which this was done.
When something is uprooted from its origin; it is typically renamed with a moniker befitting of its new social setting. even as late as 1988 you could’ve been Pascal from Port au Prince until you arrive in Boston, now you could be Peter to your new community.
I bring this up to ask about Hip hip. we adore it and many of us don’t see the world without it. Few of us see the world because of it. nonetheless, what has happened to this folk scene ?
what do we do with it now that it’s almost solely a career path ?
is music still a vehicle of the impoverished and underserved ? can it still speak for the times ?
better question might be, what the fuck was the 70s if the state dept had so much ….jurisdiction in the 60s.
