"When you are 17 years old, you will strike out Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig, one right after the other. Men will be afraid of the lightening in your fingertips. A few days later you will be fired from the major leagues because 'Girls are too delicate to play baseball.'" In 1931 17-year-old Jackie Mitchell struck out both Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig during an exhibition game against the Yankees. A few days later, her contract was voided and women were declared unfit to play baseball. Gender segregation was never really meant to protect women in competition; it exists to protect a fragile masculinity.

This week’s artifacts from the @YogiBerraMuseum are the original #JoeDiMaggio and #MickeyMantle plaques from old, pre-renovation @YankeeStadium! These were the very ones announced on Mickey’s retirement day ceremony in 1969. The Mick subsequently surprised DiMaggio that day by revealing the Yankee Clipper would be getting a plaque of his own to join the monuments to #BabeRuth, #LouGehrig and #MillerHuggins that stood in centerfield, in play, back then.
