Louis II of Hungary Marries Mary of Austria
On July 22, 1515, the young King Louis II of Hungary married Mary of Austria, strengthening the powerful Habsburg connections with the kingdoms of Hungary and Bohemia. Their marriage was part of the famous Habsburg marriage alliances that aimed to secure influence across Europe.
Louis II and Mary were both members of Europe’s ruling dynasties, with Louis representing the Jagiellonian line and Mary the Habsburg family. Though their marriage was arranged for political reasons, the couple became closely connected during a turbulent period marked by rivalry between European powers and the growing threat of the Ottoman Empire.
Their story would later take a tragic turn after Louis’s death at the Battle of Mohács in 1526, leaving Mary widowed at a young age. She went on to become an important Habsburg figure, while the marriage remained a key moment in the rise of Habsburg influence in Central Europe.
