Day 21: Favourite Horseman of the Apocalypse
All the horsemen are interesting in the way they are made and portrayed. War selling guns in Africa and Famine hanging out in fancy restaurants are both great modern takes on timeless figures. In the same vein, it's a clever move to replace Pestilence with Pollution. The death toll of a modern pandemic is nowhere near the plague in the middle ages and yet pollution is a truly big threat to the future of our species. Out of the four horsemen, the only one who remains fairly traditional is Death, being the cloaked skeleton we're used to. He is, after all, in the whole history of life, a constant.
Anyway, my favourite is Pollution because of the imagery associated with them. War crying blood and Famine sprouting sharp teeth is nice and all, but there's something truly otherwordly in the face of Pollution, who is dressed in white, highlighting the dirt of oil, who carries garbage like decorations wherever they go and who turn their crown black when they touch it. I like how they lack gender, they don't really talk like a normal person and they look serene. Honestly, they are an almost seductive figure.
