Something I will never get over is how interesting Brennan makes all his plots, all his campaigns and battles and story lines and characters. I had my dad tell me once that the best thing a story can be isn't "well written" it's "interesting", and it's changed my view point on stories so much. Brennan never fails to be interesting.
Oh you want a battle? It's never just: here's your enemies, fight! It's: Drive through a car chase, roll for police, find all the pieces of the missing armor in this haunted house, fight a flying bank in the air, try to navigate the rave of zombies and werewolves going at each other, try not to swap bodies with the raptors!
Oh, you want characters? Here's Ayda Aguefort, she reincarnates whenever she dies and hates her past self for getting rid of her notes and she falls in love at sixteen. Here's Comfrey MacLeod, who is one of the greatest adventurers ever and she can't ever stop because if she does she has to face the mess she left behind. Here's Lucienne Rex, who made a pact with her bff/situationship and broke it and fixed it again, who doesn't want to be another cog in the machine.
You want characters? Here's Evan Kelmp, the only person who would willingly give up magic, who spent his life trying to find someone who would believe it was real so they could help him, who saw that wands worked off intention and put his back in the box and belted it shut so he would never hurt anyone. Here's Evan Kelmp, a wizard who'd rather be normal, here's Evan Kelmp afraid of himself.

Margaret Encino, discussing Lucienne Rex: All I'm saying is that she's, like, a good friend."
Skip: Are you kidding me? Are you kidding me right now?
