One Piece Egghead Arc Soundtrack Review.
I've been working on listening to the Egghead soundtrack, and I already got to the track that reminds me of West Side Story. It's Track #18 Rob Lucci: Awakened Form. It makes sense that it would be Lucci's soundtrack. The rivalry between him and the straw hats does feel very Jets vs. Sharks. It's not just him and Luffy. Did y'all notice how Zoro wouldn't stop fighting him, even after it was obvious that he had won? Jimbei had to drag him off because Zoro wanted to put that kitty down for good.
Now, there's another track that reminds me of something. This time it's the Five Elders track. It's #22. This one reminds me of Rite of Spring, and this one feels a bit more obvious to me. I'm like... At this point, it's gotta be intentional. This makes sense for the Gorosei too because they love sacrificing people. The one in Elbaf that I pointed out yesterday also feels like Rite of Spring, but I might be thinking of Appalachian Spring. I'd have to check. It would make sense either way because apparently Kohei Tanaka went to Berklee. Maybe he likes the Americana sound. If not, Stavinsky (Rite of Spring) was an influence for Copland (Appalachian Spring). I'd have to go back and listen to the ballet scores because I think I remember, but I'm not sure.
The track that played when Saturn got taken out by Imu is #37, and the beginning is creepy because how how the strings are being played. Very contemporary. Honestly, that way of playing started being used more after the world wars probably because of everything that people saw and lived. Totally unrelated but... Astor Piazzolla also uses that effect in his tangos.
Kuma's Life track is #53. It's seven minutes long. The longest track of the entire Egghead OST. The first 2 minutes are very intense, and then it kind of moves into something beautiful for like 30 seconds or so, before going back to intense. It's intensely beautiful at that point. It kind of stays that way for another 2 minutes ish. Then, it goes back to the beautiful piano line with strings accompaniment. This time, there's also a cello solo. It stays in this mood for another minute or so. In the final minute, you can hear some of the intensity again, but we end with the pretty piano line again. I feel like it's a perfect representation of Kuma's Life. Very intense. Lots of despair. But also pockets of hope and happiness. In the end, Kuma was saved by Nika like his father told him.
Track #1 is intense because it's the Lulusia track. #3 had me tearing up almost instantly because it's called My Daddy, so it's Bonney and Kuma. #5 is a bop, and there are several bops here. #36 is Imu's, and the organ is meant to be creepy, but I had a good organist friend in college, so I just love it. He really made me appreciate the sound of an organ. I was over here like... YAAAAASSS. Track #41 is Koby's track, and it has such a pretty start to it with woodwinds and strings. Track #50 is Kuma and Ginny's track, and it reminds me of something out of a Shojo, but I can't say which one. Track #51 is Bonney and Kuma's track, and it's all strings. Very beautiful. Track #54 is Bonney's. It's called Help Me, Daddy. Also very emotional. All of their little family tracks were well done.
Overall, this is like a 2-hour listen, but it's worth it. Some tracks I did listen to while scrolling here or on Twitter, but I stopped for quite a few of them and just listened. The ones mentioned here are the ones that caught my attention the most. I did something similar when I first caught up with the manga and the anime. I just wasn't on Tumblr at the time. Plus, that time I listened to the WHOLE soundtrack, which took a lot longer. I'm probably going to do the same for Elbaf once it's done.
