More than 4 billion years ago, when the solar system was still young and the Earth was still growing, a giant object the size of Mars crashed into the Earth. The biggest piece that broke off of the early Earth formed our moon. But precisely when this happened has remained a mystery. In a new study in the journal Geochemical Perspectives Letters, researchers used crystals brought back from the moon by Apollo astronauts in 1972 to help pinpoint the time of the moon's formation. Their discovery pushes back the age of the moon by 40 million years, to at least 4.46 billion years old. "These crystals are the oldest known solids that formed after the giant impact. And because we know how old these crystals are, they serve as an anchor for the lunar chronology," says Philipp Heck, the Field Museum's Robert A. Pritzker Curator for Meteoritics and Polar Studies and the Senior Director of the Negaunee Interactive Research Center, a professor at the University of Chicago, and the study's senior author.

I have a question! I don't mean to be stupid so I apologize if this is a dumb question.
How and why does the moon reflect sunlight and illuminate earth at night? Like, I know it reflects sunlight in a bunch of directions and I know it only reflects a small amount but... why? How? Like, what is the moon's surface made of that lets it do that? Or does that not matter and it's because of size and distance? And if that is the case, how come when we pick up a random rock it doesn't reflect any sunlight???
I am not good at earth science so again I'm sorry if this is dumb.

Scientists have developed a nuclear fuel source no larger than a seed, which NASA will test for use in future moon missions.
Scientists in the U.K. have created mini, seed-sized nuclear fuel cells that could power futuristic flower-shaped reactors on the moon as soon as 2030. The tiny new fuel cells, developed by researchers at the Nuclear Futures Institute at Bangor University in Wales, are roughly the size of poppy seeds, which are around 0.04 inch (1 millimeter) across. The mini pellets are a type of tri-structural isotropic particle (TRISO) fuel, which is made from uranium, carbon and oxygen surrounded by a hard, ceramic-like shell. The cells are much more durable and efficient than traditional nuclear fuels, which makes them perfect for space exploration. The fuel cells are designed to power the Space Flower Moon Micro Reactor, a conceptual car-sized fusion reactor designed by Rolls-Royce. Funding for the reactor was secured in early March, and the design is a leading candidate to power future moon bases as a part of NASA's Artemis program, which aims to establish a permanent base on the moon by 2030. Researchers think one of the durable pellets could power a single reactor for up to 15 years.

Melba Mouton worked during the era of "Hidden Figures" at NASA. The newly named Mons Mouton overlooks an area that will also be targeted by an ice-hunting rover in 2024 or so.
NASA named a huge moon landmark after a prominent Black mathematician who worked during at the agency the "Hidden Figures" era.
The name of Melba Mouton (1929–1990) will be designated by NASA on a Delaware-size flat moon mountain near the water-rich lunar south pole. The moon's south pole is a target of Artemis program astronauts, who are expected to land as soon as 2025.
The mountain is one of 13 candidate landing sites for Artemis 3, and is adjacent to where the agency's ice-hunting VIPER (Volatiles Investigating Polar Exploration Rover) lunar rover will touch down in 2024 or so upon Astrobotic's Griffin lunar lander. It was the VIPER team who proposed Mons Mouton's name, NASA officials stated(opens in new tab) Wednesday (Feb. 15).
