Got pocket change? Consider this Spotify Premium promo to support Louis’ new single

Spotify is running a promo to try Premium for 3 months for only $0.99 (expires December 31, 2017). I am seeing this promo in the US – if people in other countries can verify, I will add links/prices for those. The only qualification is that you haven’t tried or subscribed to Premium previously on the account.

This is approximately the same cost as buying or gifting a single once. Additionally, Billboard has announced that starting in 2018 it will change charting rules and give greater weight to subscription service streams over ad-support streams. That means that streams on the free version of Spotify will weigh less than on premium version starting on January 1.

The Math™

In my personal experience, a free Spotify account plays approximately 40 seconds of ads every 30 minutes (30 seconds of ad + 5 seconds if intro/outro). This means approximately 2.2% of the time you spend streaming on free Spotify is dedicated to ad time. This averages out to about 30-32 minutes of ads over 24 hours. For a song of approximately 3 minutes, 30 fewer minutes of ads equals about 10 additional streams per day.

Currently, 150 streams are the equivalent of one sale of a single. So non-stop playing of a single song over the duration of the trial would approximately be the sale of 6 additional single equivalents per person compared to the free version.

Alternatively, I also encourage you to use the premium trial to listen to whatever music you like as much as you like :)

That’s completely understandable. I would recommend you set reminder for two dates:

83 days from today (one week before promotional period expiration), and

88 days from today (two days before promotional period expiration)

This way, you have two reminders to cancel before the period ends.

No worries! Streaming on Spotify’s free version will still impact his Spotify chart position and contribute to streams (single equivalents). Every stream counts! Additionally, I don’t think Spotify has changed any rules around payout to artists per stream or tiered free vs. Premium streams payout.
