Wagakki Band - The Traditional Japanese Rock Band

Here I am with the final part of March’s themed week in “Focusing on”! Today’s subject is one of the most relevant and powerful ensembles ever seen in the contemporary Japanese music, thanks to the incredible commistion between past and present. They are known as Wagakki Band, formed on 2013 and nowadays composed by Yuuko Suzuhana (vo.), Daisuke Kaminaga (shakuhachi), Kiyoshi Ibukuro (koto), Beni Ninagawa (tsugaru jamisen), Kurona (wadaiko), Machiya (vo. & gt.), known for being also the vocalist and guitarist of the known band m:a.ture, Asa (ba.) and Wasabi (dr.). The band name comes from two words, where the first one, wagakki, has a fundamental relevance for understanding their concept; in fact it is the Japanese word used for defining the Japanese traditional instruments, which, as you can see, are used inside their sound, along with the energetic component of rock music. So their musical genre is indeed a folk-rock, with strong influences from metal and vocaloid. Their debut occurred on November 2013 with their first cover release, the mini-album Joshou. (Prologue).

The lead-track, entitled Tengaku (Heaven tune), cover of the famous theme by Kagamine Rin, is a really chanting song, with an articulated instrumental work and great vocals; the song is about a melody which touches the heaven. It has been followed by the first album Vocalo Zanmai (Abundant vocaloid), already reviewed here and the single Hanabi (Fireworks).

The title-track perfectly mixes the traditional elements with a powerful rock sound, greatly helped by the guitar; the song is about a party made of colors and emotions. It has been followed by the single Ikusa/Nadeshiko Sakura (War/Pink cherry tree).

The second title-track, used as ending theme for the anime Sengoku musou, is well sustained by the marvelous shakuhachi and the sumptous voice of Yuko Suzuhana; the song is about a birth of a new love. It has been followed by the single Hanafurumai (The flower’s behavior), the second album Yasouemaki (Picture of a grass field), reviewed here and the single Strong Fate.

The title-track, used as theme for the movie Zane -Sunde wa ikenai heya-, is a powerful and astonishing ballad, where Yuko Suzuhana shows off her incredible talent as shigin vocalist; the song is about the fate of the world, which is already determined. It has been followed by the singles Valkyrie -Sen otome- and Kishikaisei (Resurrection).

Wagakki Band can be surely the best act for define what is the real musical spirit of Japan nowadays. A country whose traditional soul never faded at all, always transmited by the strong cultural identity in all the things they do, even in the artistical ones. This ensemble has become so popular and supported because of their embracing this concept of tradition, incorporating it inside a modern genre like the rock is. Starting as a simple Vocaloid cover band, they quickly become relevant in Japan and then they reached oversea stages, such as Europe and United States, conquering Western fans. But their success didn’t stop to this single career, because even some members tried to have a solo career; Yuko Suzuhana was already known as a famous utaite and she recently released the EP Cradle of Eternity, as well as being part of the trio Hanafugetsu, while the bassist Asa released his first album last month.
