Dear Gus & Magnus,
Gus went to the Calhoun's for dinner tonight. After dinner the rest of us hung out on the front porch. Magnus liked having us all to himself. He used his digger to dig in the vacant part of the flower bed and then mandated the rest of us join him for a game of basketball on the porch.
When Gus got home, he tried to take over the rules of the basketball game. Sibling chaos ensued.

Dear Gus & Magnus,
In a recent visit to Mr. Matt's house, he taught Gus how to use the can crusher. He came home and asked if he could have one at our house. Grandpa & Tutu bought one for him and mounted it on the back porch wall. He was so excited that I went out to our recycling bin and dug out some cans for him.
When I was a little boy, I used to love crushing cans. My dad used to drive slowly down dirt roads looking for discarded cans littering the ditches. I rode in the back of the truck and I'd jump out to get the cans. I also spent lots of afternoons at the feed store crushing bags and bags of aluminum cans, then we'd go to the scrapper and cash them in. I think that was my first avenue toward making my own money outside of things my parents paid me for. I'm taking pride in watching Gus get so excited about crushing cans.

We drove back to Grandpa & Tutu's today and Gus rode a horse for the first time. Also, when we got back, Tish's brother Marty and his fiance, Kristina, had arrived after a long drive from Vancouver, Canada.

Dear Gus & Baby #2,
Mom and Grandpa hung lots of art today, Tutu made lots of food today, I raked leaves, and Gus dug a lot of dinosaur eggs--some kind of toy paleontology kit. Then we all went to Home Depot and Kroger for supplies. We also charged the batteries for the remote control digger they sent Gus for his birthday. Grandpa tried to use it to feed Suki her dinner, but the equipment wasn’t quite sophisticated enough.

Dear Gus,
This morning Tutu made pancakes using your rice milk--”More pancakes.”--then we all went to Wickenburg to the grocery store and to get chicken feed. We also bought you a hat to protect you from the sun. When we came back, you helped Grandpa deliver the feed to various animal pens.
You didn’t take much of a nap today and it showed in your behavior as the day wound down. You got frustrated easily, which made things hard on me and Mom. When we changed your diaper, you kicked us. When Mom gave you your water, you swatted at it. We think you picked up the hitting thing at daycare and we aren’t sure how to combat it. Putting you in time-out doesn’t seem to be working. We hope it’s just a phase that you’ll have to work through with age, because you’re the sweetest boy in every other way.

Dear Gus,
You’re having such a good time visiting Grandpa & Tutu. You’re getting to explore the property on your own, interact with the animals, and help out in various tasks, like feeding the dogs. We also made a trip to Home Depot before Grandpa took us out for a Mother’s Day lunch. This afternoon we helped put up some fencing to extend the chicken coop in anticipation of more peacocks.
By naptime/bedtime, you were exhausted and went right to sleep.

Dear Gus,
You took your first plane ride today after we woke you up around 4.30am to go visit Grandpa and Tutu. You spent all your time at the airport saying, “Airplane right there!” Even after we were on the plane, you looked out the window keeping an eye out for them. About 90 minutes into the flight, you got a little bored and we kept you supplied with snacks and books and eventually we turned to the iPad, where we had downloaded Season 35 of Sesame Street for you and bought you some new headphones, but you weren’t into the headphones, and not really into watching the iPad. So we wrestled you for the final hour of the flight, but you were quiet. (Thank you.)
You loved being able to run around at Grandpa’s place. And even more, you loved hanging out with the chickens. At one point, we just locked you in their pen and all pulled up a chair to watch you interact with them. You held a constant conversation with them as you gave them bread and banged around in their water.
Mom found a rattlesnake this afternoon, so we’re keeping a close eye on where you go.

Dear Gus,
Today we spent the whole day outside, working with Grandpa to uncover a septic tank, then we dug a trench from the septic tank to about the edge of the property. You ran around all day and helped Tutu with the chickens. Mom kept you slathered in sunscreen, and we both tried to keep you in a hat, but you didn’t really like wearing it. Eventually, Mom put you in pajama pants and one of her t-shirts so you’d be more protected from the sun. When bedtime rolled around, the whole lot of us were spent.
