Anyone who knows me well enough by this point will know that my personal hero is Arjen Anthony Lucassen of Ayreon. However, there's someone else that's been a huge influence on me both musically and just kind of inspirationally; and nobody I know has ever heard of him!
This gentleman on the left is MC Devlin. He was in a moderately well-known (for the scene, anyway) skacore band called No Cash:
Pretty hardcore! But these guys eventually broke up due to creative differences. Some time later, MC Devlin started a band called Mad Conductor and dropped one of my favourite albums of all time, "Renegade Space Rock."
here's one of my favourite songs that highlights the contrast between them. Going away from the straight ska/hardcore of No Cash into this unique flavour of hip-hop still heavily inspired by those genres was just something I found so fascinating when I was younger. The musical stylings in particular were just something that resonated with me personally; because I love ska, and hip hop, and hardcore, and all of these influences that he pulls from. Seeing the low view count and the kind of niche genre fusion going on just made me feel like I'd discovered something truly special here, and to this day it inspires me to want to make my own flavour of music rather than sticking to any particular genre or stereotype. To me, this album as a creative project just taught me that if you make whatever YOU want to as an artist, no matter how small your fanbase, you'll find people who really dig what you're doing. This was one of the first albums that just resonated with *me* as a person, like 'yeah. I understand that not everyone will like this. but *I* absolutely love this'
This is *arguably* my favourite song of his, but 'Members Only' and especially his collab 'It Still Makes Me Wonder' with the Stupid Stupid Henchmen (another excellent band) are worth checking out too!!
