Sharon Jones was the original powerhouse that drew me into the world of Daptone Records, but Charles Bradley was the label's shrieking, beating heart. His upbringing consisted of running away from a home where his bedroom was a sand floor basement, to hitchhiking his way to becoming a chef in the Job Corps, to part-time James Brown screamer, to almost dying of an allergic reaction to penicillin, to finally finding his home as the screaming eagle of soul on Daptone.
