Trembling - tired, stressed

Twitching - slight indication of many emotions

Twisting - stronger emotions

Drooping - relaxed

Pooling or dropping completely out of shape - completely relaxed, asleep

Tucking a wing round someone - possessive, affectionate

Vibrating - very happy

Hiking up - defensive, distressed

Pulled tight against back - practicality for sparring, alternatively: combined with dimming of the colour indicates embarrassment or shame

Flaring - aggressive or showing off, surprise

Flicking the tips - amusement/interest

'Fluffing up' - the wing filaments become thicker and glow brighter. Indicates contentment, happiness, comfort, pride

Sharpening into flat rays - aggressive, will stab, 'leave me alone'

Quivering - uncertainty, pleasure - depends on context

Curling - general strong reaction to something

Fluttering - general happiness, "pleased to see you"

And of course since Mal is awkward and complicated, Mal-specific emoting:

Humming - acknowledgement

Trilling - happiness

Twitching wings - thinking heavily about things

Twisting wings - worried, concerned

Fluffing up - specifically pride for him

Some mornings I remember Malthael went full mad scientist with mortal souls and wonder if he wrote a full-on research paper on the results

On the other hand I imagine Malthael in a full lab coat and safety goggles and giggle like a child

To clarify on Malthael's current state of "drunk off his ass":

The drink is brewed from a combination of Light and the water from the Gardens. It tends to be left for a few centuries... Give or take... To concentrate and become angelic alcohol before being put in containers to be consumed later. Being that it's brewed with light, it has a particular tendency to get any angel drunk just to start with and then really hit them once the light diffuses into their resonance.

That is to say, Mal's just getting the fun part for now and will be dead to the world once it diffuses.

Malthael, happening to prefer a different flavour and strength to it than his siblings, has his own particular way of adding to the base mix, as most angels do. Nobody knows exactly what it is, and he isn't telling.

(Might be a drop or two of liquid emotion from the Pools, ssshhh)

What he's drunk on right now is from his own stash in his old quarters in Heaven... Which he hasn't been in for probably a millennium or two. It's very strong. And lethal to mortals even in small amounts. And will knock him the fuck out for a good day or two.

The hangover, of course, is on an entirely different level because at least the mortals of Sanctuary aren't entirely light and sound and don't get affected so heavily.
